Black Snow NAILS atmosphere and makes you feel vulnerable and alone. As a part of a rescue team dispatched to a research complex in the middle of the tundra. You end up separated, chased and all but you remain. With dark hallways and the ominous presence of something unknown lurking in the shadows and no way to defend yourself, the true sense of making you feel afraid is done right. You must avoid a darkness out to kill you by using light, and solve many puzzles that will test your ability to think laterally.

I recommend, for a full playthrough of the game you'll want to check it out here at my rapidly growing youtube channel. Here's the link to the Playlist -> Youtube.com

Graphically the game is beautiful. The facility feels authentic, and when you step outside into the dark cold winter night you have a sense of chill from the ambiance of wind and the detail of snow blowing across the surface.

The sound is right too. The voice acting in the beginning could have been better but it certainly isn't considered bad. It's right on par, or arguably somewhat better with most other mods today. The ambiance is right on cue and gives you a sense that you're not alone. Going room to room makes you wonder if it's safe to enter the next door or go down the hallway. Sometimes you'll hear a moan off in the distance, or the banging of metal by the wind lashing the sides of the facility if you're close to a window.

This mod has so much potential I could see it hitting it big in the Horror community of Lets Players if it was expanded upon.

Great Job Kremator! I speak for many when I say EXPAND THE MOD! :)

Gameplay:
For a Half-Life mod, it's quite original to find a mod without any weapons. Not even a flashlight, and that last thing is extremely important in this mod. The enemies from the darkness manage to make you hesitate to ever approach an unlit room, and while they represent the only form of AI in the entire game, they manage to move with reason, which only makes them more fearsome. In certain parts, an intelligent use of flares is vital. The cold also plays an important role, and will represent... the less painful death, if you're not careful. The map, in this case a research station in Greenland in the middle of the snow desert, is not so big, but you might get lost if you're not careful. The puzzles that span through the entire game can always be solved with good common sense, an astute observing of the surroundings, and some might require some concentration even. Perfect mix between Horror and Puzzles, like I said earlier.

Story:
It is obvious from the beginning that a lot of effort was put into this. The opening cutscene is amazingly well animated and directed. The story itself seems to be a succesful mix between "The Thing" and "Alan Wake". Throughout the game, the player will take pleasure in reading documents scattered around the building, sometimes of no importance at all, but they all contribute to adding to the atmosphere. Their visual quality is also astonishingly realist. The ending was a bit underwhelming though... and also the realization that so many "Chekhov Guns" will remain without consequences, and many questions unanswered... I wish there was a sequel.

Sound:
Very convincing, some sudden noises will give you a good scare!

Music:
I just realized there's no music at all. Incredible!

Graphics:
Nothing seems improved here, in comparison to Half-Life 2, but I can't complain about it.

Length:
1 or 2 hours.

Conslusion:
An unexpected but pleasant surprise, this mod is an original mix of Horror and Puzzle-Solving. Try it now!

I liked it, it was fun for the whole family, except for grandma who didn't like it please add more cocoa for grandma.

Mod would be perfect with a Flashlight.

As it is, you can walk past areas you need to visit, several times, wandering around in the dark loses the scare factor after awhile and just becomes annoying.

Also, I don't know if it's a bug, but that monster never "Goes away", i.e, he stands right in the only doorway of a room I am in, meaning my only choice is to die by him, effectively making that playthrough dead and I have to reload from some earlier point.

I love Puzzle games, I played Penumbra, Amnesia, and several other such games...But this lacks direction. It has atmosphere, and mechanics down pretty good. Story is one of those vague, Stephen King like stories, which is fun.

But it lacks direction. You're thrust into this world, with no idea what to do or why you're doing anything, and as far as I can remember, the character, you, don't have Amnesia. Reading around you can find out details about what happened and why you are there, but by direction I mean objects.

For example, you need a bottle of pills. There is 20 bottles on the shelf. You can run by, pressing E constantly and not get anything. But the Bottle you need is there, though they all use the SAME pill bottle model. The one you need, does not stand out, it is not another color, it does not have a name, it does not glow...this is simply frustrating. I don't want my hand held, but objects that you can pick up should be more notcable.

more hints, more logic. the ambient and other sounds are excellent. could use more custom content besides retextured hl stuff.

Sounds pretty awesome and I love the gameplay of Raed :)

The greatness of this mod cant be described by words, ive honestly never enjoyed a horror game as much as i did with this. I hope you guys continue to make mods and maybe even games! Im completly honest with you when i say that you are above Amnesia and half life in gameplay and atmosphere.

Peace guys.

Nice mod, nice environment. Managed to create a good experience without a single shot!

The single issue is the ending. I mean, STOP WITH THE "all you did mean absolutely nothing" ending... You not only figuratively, but literally blew all our expectations on finding out more about the base, the floating spores, the stuff on the ground... Just don't.
