Your name is David Leatherhoff, and you're addicted to a new painkiller from a company unknown. They keep coming, and you can't stop taking them. Lately you have started to experience illusions, dreams picking at your deepest and darkest fears. Finally, you go to the Hospital, seeking help. First, however, you make a stop into the bathroom, where another bottle of pills awaits you, standing out like a beacon in the night in your depraved eyes. When will it all stop? Afraid of Monsters is a survival horror mod for Half Life 1. What's new in AoM DC? - New monsters (no Half-Life reskin) and weapons - Flashlight can only work with batteries that you pick up - Improved maps and totally new maps - 4 different endings and ways to beat the mod - Random monster spawns - New hud, sprites, textures, sounds, models and animations - Easy mode is easy, normal is normal, hard is hard

Report article Error fix and celebrations

It has been 2 years since this mod got released, so I wanted to somehow celebrate it. The only way I can think of how, is to show you ModDB members, who might have missed this mod, that it exists! As it has been Halloween, I thought that this would be quite interesting to post, as this is a horror mod. Well fitting for this kind of weather and atmosphere that is going on right now.

Some quick info about the mod:

You play a guy named David, who is a drug-addict. He can no longer stand it out, so he decides to seek help at a hospital. When he's there, as addicted he is, he goes into a restroom and takes some more pills. But this time, it goes very wrong. From the pills you take, you start to experience hallucinations, and those hallucinations are your enemies. But you can't stop take the pills, because then you will die.

Sick hallway
David looks out

The mod has four different endings and altarnate routes, which makes it interesting to replay it. And if you see all those endings, you will be rewarded with a secret neat item. There are also plenty of secret hidden things that you can find.

You can download this mod here:

With good things comes even better things

As you might understand, this mod is an improvement of the older version Afraid of Monsters. I made Afraid of Monsters alone, so it didn't turn out that well. So with Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, I got help from James Marchant, Minuit, with very much things.

You can find Afraid of Monsters here:

Moddb.com

Currently, me and James and some other people, are working with a new Half-Life 1 horror mod called Cry of Fear. It has the same theme, and we think you might like it if you like this mod.

You can find Cry of Fear here:

Moddb.com

Error fix

I know some people have complained about an error which says: "Cache_TryAlloc: 12708976 is greater than free hunk" There is a simple fix to that error if you're using Steam. Right click the game in Steam, click properties, click "Set Launch Options", then type;

"-heapsize 512000"

Co-op

There is one more thing I would like to say before this news ends, and that is; how many people would like to see a proper Co-op "expansion" to this mod? If you want, we might be able to make it. That was it for this news. I hope you like Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut, and my other upcoming project.

Will have to get it ASAP (unfortunately, as implied, that won't be quick) to play this.

I think coop would be great, maybe it could be a Sven Coop addon like They Hunger Coop? New weapons and all? Also who remembers playing this master piece two years ago? I do and I was scarred shitless. Happy two late years!

I would really like a proper co-op of AoM DC. The Sven Co-op version isn't really that great without the new HUD and batteries and the weapons and all other custom things.
I also wish there would be some boss fights of some sort.

The Sven Co-op version of was a mess, but quite fun though. But still, I prefer playing a more decent co-op mode with a more survival feeling.

I hope you would tone down the default movement speed, not only it would help tense up the atmosphere but also make it less frustrating for the Co-op players to stick together and stuff like that.

Will there also be any extra features exclusive for Co-op?
Maybe new maps suited for Co-op?

It's good to see that AOM is still getting some love :D

If you have time, I would like to see some of the engine enhancements seen in COF (eg the improved Flashlight). That would be very cool ;)

I great that you still have ideas/support your mod rather than some developers that just finish it and never look back again.

It would be interesting to see the Afraid of Monsters universe expand in some way, coop sounds interesting since it would be executed the right way with you guys making it, the Sven-Coop port lost loads of atmosphere. :/

They are all right:make a co-op version. But take care to work on the maps again,in order to make the mod impossible to be played by one player(like the Sven co-op Escape series).

I see that you seem pretty interested in a Co-op version. What we would fix in that version is proper keys, spawns, balanced items and monsters and a proper story so it makes sense. Also you will keep your weapons and items that you had from the previous maps.

What about my idea of changing the movement speed, the default value of 400 is rather not my thing. So if it's going to be a new story, that sounds great but it would sound unpractical for more than one character to have a joint hallucination.

kitethefallenangel Nov 8 2009, 7:57am replied:

What do you mean "proper keys"?
And there's also gonna be new monsters, huh?

As for storyline, since the SP campaign is about a drug addict,
how could more than one person share a hallucination except for some paranormal explanation which I could tell none of your stories involve.

I also think that the Co-op servers should all only
allow up to two players. From my experiences, a whole bunch of players in a co-op server sort of takes away the fun of a slow-paced tactical teamwork experience with everyone running around and stuff.
