5thLegacy is a massive expansion to the original Rise of Rome that modifies almost every aspect of the game to add and improve upon the original design. With dozens of new civilizations, several new units, new map types, fine-tuned balance, harder computer players, and much more, this is the largest mod for the original Age of Empires: the Rise of Rome.

The mod adds numerous civilizations to the game that are generally well designed and fairly balanced. From Germanics and Aksumites, to Van Lang and Maurya, there is a civilization for every type of strategy. Additionally, several new building and interface sets are also added to keep a bit of visual variety amongst new and old civilizations.

The new units in the mod are rigorously tested to provide a solid and competitive experience while still adding more depth to the gameplay.

The computer players, or "AI", have had their strategies vastly improved to play much better and more competitively with the human player; you probably will not need to play 1 vs 7 on hard difficulty to face a challenge anymore.

Most of the maps have also seen changes/improvements with a few being replaced altogether. Resource placement is a little better and more fair, and the new maps offer different gameplay approaches.

5thLegacy also comes in 2 separate versions: the "Classic" and the Expanded, offering two different experiences. The "Classic" version stays true to the goal and offers the base experience. The Expanded version adds more units and features to expand the gameplay even further; it also features a few unique campaigns that make great use of these additions.

To install: unzip the file(s) and move the 5thLegacy mod folder into your AoE directory/mods folder and load in UPatch's mod manager. Installing UPatch will make the mods folder in your AoE directory. This mod *requires UPatch HD to run (an alternate install is available for RockNRoR).

Upcoming Version 1.9

News

Age of Empires Title

I'm happy to announce the development and upcoming release of Version 1.9 of 5thLegacy.
This new update will hopefully be finished in a couple of months, barring any delays. It will be the first update since Augusto's departure from the project and will see most of its work being done on the standard or classic version of 5thLegacy. The Expanded version will only be receiving some minor fixes and balance changes and will no longer be in active development.

Version 1.9 PreviewSkirmishers in action

Version 1.9 will be introducing many changes to fix bugs and improve the gameplay balance in several areas. With this new version, the work rate of Villagers will be increasing by about 12% on average, making it similar to the original gather rates. Because Villagers will be working faster, Aging up will also cost more resources (only +100 food for the Copper and Bronze Ages). A couple of new units will be added, including the Improved Slinger and the new Skirmisher unit-line (4 units altogether). Joining the new units will also be a handful of new civilizations, including the Armenians, Yuezhi, and Lydians. A few more civilizations are being considered, but are not confirmed yet.

Version19Preview2The new Copper Age cost

This update will be focusing on bringing the computer players, or AI, up-to-date by overhauling every strategy that they use (water strategies are planned, but may not be finished for the initial release). These new strategies will better utilize the 75 population limit and will have better unit variety and different strategy types (the computer players can Age-rush now). All civilizations will be receiving balancing changes and additional information will be included in the Civ Cards to reveal the "hidden" work rate modifiers. The balancing between units is also being closely watched and tested to provide the strongest and most competitive balance 5thLegacy has yet seen. Version 1.9 will also mark the 6th Year Anniversary of 5thLegacy first release, so I'm excited to see you all there.

This mod is so cool! May be a longshot, but do you you can put Age of Empire II HD's Legionary over the Legion unit?

I generally try to keep the original graphics when possible, unless as alternate upgrades like Silver Cavalry or Cedar Frames.
I'm not sure, but I believe AoE2 unit graphics aren't the right size for AoE1. Additionally, I'm not sure adding an alternate graphic upgrade for Legions would work very well; it was difficult enough to have Cataphracts with alternate graphics.

Great job guys, a little suggestion for civilisation, Armenia was a major power and a rival of Rome for a time. There was many wars involving them against Assyrians, Rome and Persians. I saw a video about their emperor Tigran II that had to fight both Persia and Rome, protecting Pontus also, It is an injustice that they aren't in the original AOE games though.

I would say It was a heavy cavalry civilisation with infantry archers, defensive and religion bonus with no navy.

I took a quick look at Armenia and they do seem like an interesting civilization; thanks for the suggestion. They were probably overlooked in previous versions of the mod because Urartu and Pontus share a similar region and potential tech tree, and "Armenia" often refers to the modern country.
Armenia was probably not included in the original game because they are relatively new when compared to the civilizations in the game.

Hello Proseon5. One quick question, is there any chance for you to put the "walkable farms" in a seperate mod file. or if it already exists, can you tell me where exactly it is located. I would very much like to use it with just the new Upatch HD version of the game. He added a mod manager and it realy needs the walkable farms in there :)
Thank you for all your hard work. My friends love playing this mod.

I suppose I could make a mod set with "only" the walkable farms. The issue would be that several mods would need to be made to accommodate for the balancing (RoR 1.0a, UPatch HD, etc).

Sorry, maybe i dont understand, but what do you mean by other mods needed to be made to balance? If i understand the mod would be a "selectable" type, *** in for personal preference aka fun. In this example the guy who made the Upatch HD wouldnt need to balance his whole patch around a new mod.

AoE1 uses complete data mods, which means everything is replaced. So, if I make a farm mod, it would have either RoR balance or UPatch HD; that would be determined by the farm mod (so there would have to be a separate farm mod for each type of balancing).
I will see about making a walkable farm mod pack sometime and uploading it.

I see, thanks for the explanation.
Well If you do make the mod, thank you in advance.
Your doing more for AOE 1 than microsoft and their failure of a remaster and return of rome dlc .
Have a good one.
