I got into to PC gaming after discovering the UT99 mod community.

I am out of the loop but I thought the IDF mod team merged with PR. Haven't had time to play. PR is one of my fave mods of all time.

I am loving the game. Any of these mods stand the test of time?

This is a fantastic mod concept as the conflict in Vietnam was so shaped by the the elements of terrain, supply and transportation to name just a few.

I have no idea how you will manage to balance the opposing sides strengths and weaknesses but I applaud the effort and hope it can be done in a convincing fashion.

I know "winning" for either side seems both historically and strategically challenging but within the context of the CoH engine it could be very interesting.

I also applaud recognition of less well-known participants in US dominated conflicts like the Aussies.

Good luck. Ignore the trolls.

Yeah this is my only complaint about Paypal, particularly if you have been automatically charged a renewal fee for a service you no longer use like Xbox Live. They deducted the annual fee even though I had a few months of credit "in advance" and I was low on funds. It took days to get refunded back to my bank and I bounced a check. I only use Paypal for direct purchases not subscription based services.

Lightzout - - 23 comments @ Project Reality v0.9 Released!

Project Reality restored my faith in the ability of a great mod team to supersede the the success of the original game by essentially rebuilding the entire game from the ground and fixing countless problems that would never get a budget at DICE.

Hopefully the PR team has been recognized by DICE for re-inventing the franchise for them much the way Desert Storm did for BF1942.

It sure doesnt show in Bad Company 2. There is no voip or friends browser working and you cant even see what the other 3 guys in your squad are carrying.

It was the great squad concept and ability I loved in BF2 that PR took to a whole new level. They broke the mold and made it something truly unique. Not just a great mod its a game without comparison. There are so many unprecedented things they have tried and weren't afraid fail on but only after doggedly trying to make it work.

Today slip on BF3 as perhaps a "real" PC BF franchise that will shake up the growing "tactical" shooter landscape means DICE has finally realized what a diamond in the rough this mod really is.

Not a bad deal for the EA/DICE team that offered little or no real support for the mod community to have yet another inspired game built for them.

I really hope BF3 is a PC game. BC2 has a cool destructive environment but scarcely anything else has been anything nearly as cool as the stuff in PR.

Its an acquired taste but I am glad it gets the attention it deserves.

This is a great game with TONS of mods. I have no idea why none of them are listed here. Shame the dev house closed.

Yes, it will be after Starcraft 2 is done. Which means there is plenty of time to play other action-rpgs while supporting smaller, indie devs like Runic. 2013?

Hey olvimasta, from the sound of your blanket statement I doubt anything would convince you otherwise but as a matter of fact you can buy stuff online without a credit card. Furthermore, online transactions are safer than credit cards but unless you are really careless. In that case maybe you should stick to whatever means you used to get games in the past. I just thought I should point out that was your saying is a pretty paranoid statement without any obvious factual basis.

Banned for what? That is a pretty serious allegation. I play DoD:S once a week and was curious about this project but I can't go anywhere something that would get me banned. Hopefully someone can clarify whether or not this is true. If it is then how the heck do you play offline? It "defeats" the purpose of the game.

Wow, this is outstanding. I am a little shocked its still going strong in 2010. I admit I lost track of this mod. ACE is one of the most ambitious and talented teams out there but Arma is such a relatively small, niche game to begin with. I will have to find my Arma disks now. I uninstalled it when I bought ArmaII but I know this is worth checking out. Anyone who played some of Operation Flashpoint's advanced mods will appreciate what these guys are doing. If you bought Arma and were disappointed I would give this a try anyway. Its really closer to a full conversion in many ways. The self-description is rather modest but I should play it again now asap.

Lightzout - - 23 comments @ Anti Fan Idiocy Assosciation

Wow, I really look forward to hearing how you plan to prevent or curb idiocy. What would a gaming community be without a bunch of rabid fans whose insatiable demands fill page after page in their forums? If we all thought the same way it would be boring as hell. As much as I agree with some of the points there are others I think are too broad or subjective to ever have consensus on. I mean if you pay attention to what the idiots are saying then what does that say about you? I will go back to ignoring them. But yeah, devs can't get no love even when they do everything right. Vote with your wallets.

This work is far and away the best of the bunch both in terms of execution and relevance in my eyes. I love how much story I can see going on in here and the model is very original. I am not someone who does this stuff for a living but my wife does. I will try to show it to her. Great job, a well-deserved prize.

Lightzout - - 23 comments @ Introducing Desura

Wow, this is a fantastic idea. Its the perfect evolutionary leap forward. When I first visited Moddb I incorrectly presumed this site would become another advertising vehicle for the publishers who happily ride on the backs of modder's hard work.

My entire interest in PC gaming came from one specific mod for UT99 and it hasn't changed since then. Sure good games have come and gone over the last 10 years but the games that have stayed with me the longest all have active mod communities. Besides leaving positive feedback and passing the word to friends it was difficult or even impossible to find, install and support mods without going through multiple different providers.

I hope this becomes the Steam for the mod world and just as I was eager to be first in line with Steam I am wholeheartedly optimistic about this may become. In particular, I hope that it will allow users to give developers direct feedback and bug reporting and make paypal contributions to help keep our favorite projects afloat during development periods.

Pavel, you are a great artist and I can't wait to own one of your amazing works of art someday.

I am looking forward to playing this mod someday too but so far I haven't had any luck. I was using SMM for a non-steam version. I just un-installed SMM and now will un-install and re-install the game in hopes it might launch. I successfully changed the fsgame and user files. I used 7-zip to extract the files in my download folder then copied into the game folder. When I tried to extract it from my download folder directly into the game directory it would seem near completion then I would get 4880 error that it couldn't output. Testing the archive with 7-zip doesnt reveal any errors.

I am just now familiarizing myself with Windows 7 Ultimate so I don't know if there are file permission issues. I also have a new GPU, the Radeon 5870 which has relatively new drivers which may not have been tested. I am pointing this out in case there may be driver conflicts or other unseen issues I may be able to help resolve.
Should I save my crash bug reports? Do you want people to send them to you?

Here is a snippet from the last crash:

XR_3DA.exe caused BREAKPOINT in module "C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl\bin\xrCore.dll" at 0023:00266024, xrDebug::backend()+740 byte(s)
