Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn.

When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.

If you've been holding out hope that Blizzard would cave in and offer an offline mode on the PC for Diablo III with its Reaper of Souls expansion, don't hold your breath. A recent dev interview really put the kibosh on that idea: Lead designer Kevin Martens stated pretty clearly that dividing the community into online and offline groups is not now, nor will it be, in the cards. When asked about the offline mode in Diablo II, he pointed out that the community back then was very unhappy about that division and added:

"That was the wrong choice to allow people to play offline, and we still stand by that. And we think Internet access is widespread. If someone has no Internet access, then yeah, Diablo III is not the game for them."

In the interview, Martens and Art Director Christian Lichtner also talked about the direction of Diablo's IIIand the game's economy sans auction house -- notably, that stockpiling items before the change won't give much of an advantage because the post 2.0 patch economy will be full of new items that can be acquired only through play.

Closed Beta of Reaper of Souls has been released as of Nov 20.

Reaper of Souls adds a number of new features to the core gameplay of Diablo III. These include:

  • One new character class: the Crusader
  • A fifth act taking the story of Diablo III "from the legendary city of Westmarch to the unhallowed halls of the Pandemonium Fortress"
  • A new artisan: the Mystic
  • A new level cap of 70 (up from 60)
  • Many new weapons and new pieces of armor
  • New skills and runes for existing classes
  • New passives and a fourth passive slot at level 70
  • New monsters to defeat

The pre-expansion patch includes:

  • Adventure Mode (Nephalem Rifts, Nephalem Trials and Bounties)
  • Loot_2.0
  • Account wide Paragon levels
  • Unlimited paragon leveling, with a bonus of +250 in each main stat (strength, dexterity, intelligence, and vitality)
  • A new gem type: Diamond
  • Class specific affix rolls on items

Due for release in 2014, same time as the pre expansion, Patch 2.0.

As much as this game sparked my interest for me to want to buy it as my first Diablo game, I really can't agree with the permanent internet requirements of it as my internet connection is already terrible as it is.

I'm sorry if you like Diablo 3.

I've always been a fan of the series, and I liked the third game at first. Then, all enemies became overpowered, all equipment and skills became underpowered, and the drops were useless. The story felt dull, and pretty much nothing could make me go on. I stopped playing in act 2.
Now, I'm deciding if I should go kill Baal again, or drop some time into DAO. It will be more fun than D3 at least.
All of this is IMO - In My Opinion. No rage please.

Im sorry you feel that way. I personaly think that the story and items get better at the end of act II. So maybe give it a push and you'll change your oppinion.

I reckon you should have kept going, the game does get better. Believe me, the last act is awesome.

Child_Services May 20 2012 replied:

I thought it was a great game, but it was terrible based solely on the fact it had to be a sequel to Diablo II. I reckon it missed the mark in a few places and the ****** aesop at the end about mankind's freedom to choose good over evil was just lame. It didn't quite live up to the still extremely playable and enjoyable game that Diablo 2 is and I don't think I'll invest in another character after I finish nightmare In D3.

The skills didn't really get underpowered, you just have to pick a skill/runeset that works together. I had this problem where I couldn't kill Belial because I was using the same ****** skillset I'd been using since the middle of act I. I sort of feel like this was done on purpose by the devs so that you explore the different combos, but it might just be that my choices were actually terrible.

I eventually changed my stuff and then the game just became too easy from that point, which I didn't really like. I'd like it if it was still challenging without being too easy or impossible.
