Well, the Empire was from it's very origins in the original trilogy a racist and sexist organization. So if there's any political statement there, it was Lucas's, and as a successor to the Empire, the First Order is just following the same logic. And not all women are heroes. Phasma is known for murdering her own people and only looking out for herself. Even betraying Brendol Hux and the First Order.
TLJ has actually become my favorite Star Wars movie, for the way it subverts expectations and breaks the formula, while also delivering a more interesting and ultimately satisfying arc for Luke. Culminating in a completely non-violent use of the force to hold single-handedly off an entire army and save the resistance is the most jedi thing ever seen in the films. But I have to admit that the detour to Canto Bight sucks, especially the reeaaally long fathier sequence.
I'm not saying everyone has to like the film or the new canon, but the anger in the fanbase and where it's directed makes me very disappointed in my fellow fans and kinda the humanity in general. Also: Mary Sue is an inherently sexist term.
