Mission Improbable

Mod review

I had downloaded the incomplete version of this two years ago, and had enjoyed it and looked forward to the release of the final chapter. I then forgot about it, save a few occasional playthroughs. It wasn't until recently I had remembered its existence, and the fact that it was probably complete by now. And complete it was! I downloaded the full version right away and played it through several times.

The final chapter certainly lived up to the anticipation. It was challenging, but possible, and very rewarding to complete. I especially liked the unique way Freeman completed his objective in the depot. The addition of the Gravity Gun (not present in the two-chapter incomplete release) was also a plus; however, it wasn't completely necessary for the chapters it was included in - most, if not all enemies were dispatched by more convential means (i.e. bullets) due to lack of physics objects.

The major concern I have with this mod is its extensive graphical update, compared to the original version. While the inclusion of new textures enhances realism, the amount of ground-based foliage (bushes, grass, flowers, etc.) borders on blatant and gives the maps a very cluttered feel. The newly-added color correction was also too intense, and bothered me to the point where I turned it off. Knowing that color correction can enhance a map's atmosphere, I believe you overdid it. Another concern involves the cinematic physics. To be specific, the rubble from the gas station explosion is non-solid in most areas, making the mod seem less immersive. Cinematic physics are also displayed on world entities where there seems to be no point but to do so (read: the shack at the end of map 3).

After giving this mod some thought, I can say I am slightly underwhelmed - mostly at the graphics, which don't live up the higher quality of the gameplay. However, this mod should still be considered for download by anyone looking for a good couple hours of entertainment.

Dystopia

Mod review

Dystopia is just Puny Human and his team of developers showing off. It is a multiplayer game where players choose one of two teams: the Punks, who usually attack map objectives, and the Corps, who usually defend. Players can then choose one of three classes: Light, which is the fastest class, but the weakest; Medium, balanced between health and speed, and has more armor than a Light; and Heavy, a robot which is slowest and strongest of all three classes. Based on their class, players choose one of four weapons, including dual pistols, a tesla cannon, and a minigun. They can also choose a variety of accesories to help them in combat. The game's killer feature is the introduction of Cyberspace. Players can access Cyberspace from terminals located in various paces around the real world, referred to as "Meatspace". They require a Cyberdeck implant. Once inside, they can manipulate various objects in Meatsace, such as doors, through access terminals, which can be defended with forcefields and passwords. While a player is in Cyberspace, his "Meatsack", or player in Meatspace, is vunerable to attack. All of the games features were addicting and I could not stop playing this game for six straight days and nights. A must-have mod for any gamer.
