MechCommander Gold - Darkest Hours v4.2
Free Fullversion Download
"MechCommander was my X-COM; it meaningfully splits your role as a player—you had to be an engineer and a tactican—oscillating between management and combat, returning to missions that you couldn't beat with creative loadouts. Atop all this, it's available for free after being released by Microsoft"
12/2018 - after two years of modding i recently released a new standalone fullversion for good old Mech Commander. My priority in comparison to the previous v3.0 was bugsolving and fixing issues. Now that procedure is done and this is the latest available fullversion - and the most complete - that ever existed. I have got a great feedback, bugreports and ideas from previous version and want to thank all people who participated in the development process to make the game comfortable to play - just like it is now, thank you, dear Mech/Battletech community!
What is MechCommander Gold - Darkest Hours fullversion standalone (for free) v4.2 all about and where are the differences between original game standalone versions?
MCG-DarkestHours savegame menu. On modDB you can find all imaginable informations about this remastered fullversion and much more MC related stuff. I wish all players a nice christmas and happy new year.

HE DID IT AGAIN!
April - 2020
Yes... after April 2017 (v2.0), X-mas 2017 (v3.0),
April 2018 (v3.3) ,X-mas 2018 (v4.0) and...
April 2019 (v4.1) - X-Mas 2019 was a bad time for MechCommanders. On december 2019 i was very busy in business and i stopped my development 2019 due to some things that happened with a certain member of the community - that repeatedly offended my work without being interrupted or any support by NGNG hosters. After i officially left NGNG and quit with SeanLang i was - one day - certainly IP banned from their webpage. I couldn't login anymore and got a permaban screen without any further notices. I could still visit the page but some months later the webpage itself vanished. Somehow 99% of all remaining MC 1 content in the internet got lost over night. Since then many people contacted me for alternate pages showing the content i released on NoGutsNoGalaxy - but any link i could refer to was leading to NGNG twitch now instead of readable forum content and information for players.
NOW! During the worst disease that mankind seems to have to master those days - i decided to help keeping people at home. What can you enjoy the most when you are at home - maybe when you even not have a permanent or stable internet connection? - MECH COMMANDER! - right! - MechCommander offers a huge load of fun and has an isometric 2D lovely detailed C&C style ingame graphics that are well aged over the years. Still - even 22 years after it has been released for the first time - it is one of the best and my absolute favorite RTS games without any base-building ever. X-Com style unit control in real time - absolutely delightful. You are playing my rematered MechCommander Gold - Darkest Hours Free Standalone Edition (developed 2016-2020). Final version number release is TODAY! There will be no further updates neither any further development of this built. This built is the most perfect and bugfree existing MechCommander standalone, that exists. I wish all MechCommanders a happy eastern and:

RizZ Note (April, 12th, 2020): I have replaced the 4.0 version built with an upgraded version that contains the last official patch and some additional minor cosmetic fixes. People who have downloaded v4.0 previously don't need to download the fullversion again. You find the download link for a 4.2 patch above. The 4.2 patch although contains it's previous version 4.1 - so no need to ask for that one anymore.
By the way - the modDB MC information guide content will be mirrored to hardlight-productions & everythingbattletech.com by long term (partner sites). MechCommander never dies - even if - it revives!

MechCommander 1 & Gold
All downloadable content
(Download MechCommander 1 *.iso/CD files)
Download MechCommander Gold *.iso/CD file *recommended & supported
*Original MC is freeware since 2006*
KEEP IN MIND before you install:
Warning: Physically MechCommander can NOT be installed on Windows8-10 or above. To workaround you can download a prepared full installed game folder. Extract and place the game folder on your hard-disk. Mount the iso file in a virtual drive (Win10 right mouse klick and you will sh.. bricks) - and starting the game by executing one of the MCG.exe files in the game folders on your hard-disk.
So when you have downloaded and mounted the disk you just need one of the following standalone game folders to start the game with. I repeat: The *.iso just needs to be mounted - you will start the game one of the from the game folders you can download below.
ModDB Original game folder full version downloads for MechCommander:
Recommended: Each standalone version above must be stored in a seperate MCG gamefolder. I recommend you name this folders like above or similar to it.

Hey Buddy dumb Question, Is this the only DL I need to run the game? or do I need another piece to the puzzle?
Darkest Hours - Fullversion - is basically ALL you need to start it.
I just completed the high res collection by adding missing resolutions. What i did with the game is... much more.

Jesus Christ 45 Solo Missions compared to the original's 3.
Edit: Wait, misread that, it's 95. Holy ****.
By the way guys, you should update this page with the 4.1 version.
I only do full version upgrades when full version numbers. (v5.0 f.e.)
Add: There is no "guys" - i'm a one man show.
I love this mod my only gripe it that you cannot scroll when you zoom in.
regardless of Resolution.
say anyone know what happened?... the forum is down..
went to twitter and seems something happened?
The website NoGutsNoGalaxy.net is down. I discovered that in a side information of NGNG podcast 195 - first 15 minutes - what a waste of time watching this going down that way. My MSG to them:
,,l,, -_- ,,l,, (Sean and Bombadil, i still love you and this is no drama - just publicity - even bad publicity - is publicity - its for free - so what?)
Actually im recreating all your loved stuff here on modDB. Just visit and explore my profile.

Hey,
Just played the 1st 3 missions of the original campaign - took a break and closed the game down - came back about an hour later and restarted the game, but none of the saved files are there (meaning i have to restart from scratch)
Now, i may have made an error and launched the game in another resolution than the one i played earlier; but i tried a few others and found that they too have no save files.
Did i inadvertently 'wipe' my progress by launching a different resolution or is there something wrong with game files etc?
Deactivate any write protection in MechCommander game folder. I recommend to save manually when autosave doesn't work. But strange i never had this or heard of this problem before. Without further information about your system / OS and how you run the game / how you installed it - i cant help.
Thats fair enough - it does seem to be the case though, at least for me.
In other news, im getting a Crash to Desktop every so often - an 'EXCEPTION' (Access violation at 0x006B9B20) along with a bunch of file location under 'processor/stack'
Any idea what that might be about? its thus far prevented me from completing Mission 14 several times now D:
READ THIS ARTICLE!!!!!!!! :
Moddb.com
... and it's subarticles. I don't help with any "ACCESS VIOLATION" - when you can't play right - it is not my issue sry.
Don't just copy the f***** disk content and making it gamefolder. It's bullsh*t.
Download a regulary pre-installed game folder (look above) from modDB and start game from there when *.iso is mounted. It is that simple. Dragging CD content to hardrive always results in sh*t.
If this is in response to me, then i havent copied any disk content and made it a game folder.
I downloaded the file linked above and followed the instructions - only 'alterations' i made were copying/replacing the files from the 4.1 version update you had too which is what you advised on the relevant page.
The Access Violations may have been related to the waypoint bug that you just linked.
Also, i seem to have just found out that i may have been playing a bunch of player-made missions rather than the original campaign?
Am 18 missions in on the 'First Operation', got stuck being unable to progress the mission so went to look for a walkthrough and it appears each Operation is/was only 6 missions each - so there doesnt seem to be anything helpful for this mission im stuck on, lol
There are campaign overviews here in moddb. I guess when you need walkthrough information you post a comment there and MechCommanders will help.

Darkerst Hourd works well but I can't make mission editor work. Mission editor windows pops up but then shuts down. What should I do to make it work?
Emulate windows 98 is the only possibility I see. Editor is a 16bit application that definitely doesn't work with 32bit/64bit systems right now.
I have a Intel Pentium 2 with 233mhz and windows 98 se on it and it works I installed the game physically and can freely mod.
Due to this exact issue, I went the route of installing a virtual machine with Windows 98. I then Had mount the game .iso thru VM settings to install MCG and editor onto the VM. Then i had to create an .iso file with win98 drivers inside it by also Mounting it thru the VM settings just to move the drivers onto win98 VM. This was an absolute pain but it sure seems to be the only option to get the full benefits out of the map editor.
Now be advised... If anyone thinks of going this route just know that Windows 98 is sooo outdated that you can't even browse the web to even download any drivers or files. So putting usb drivers into an ISO was the only work around to move files onto the VM. The hardest part to this process was to make win98 read USB flash drives in order to transfer map files back onto Windows 7 or 10. Sadly newer flash drives don't work regardless so you have to find an old used one that's like 8 gigs in size. Also win98 will force you to format the flash drive on its OS before it will read any files on it.
If you make a solo map and extract the DPK file you will only need the .Sol and .Fit file to transfer.
But don't expect much from the editor it has tight limits and anything beyond must be scripted manually into the game files. I use editor only for getting x and y coordinates on maps and place some terrain and buildings, everything else I'm scripting myself.
If anyone wants the minimods I originally made for NoGutsNoGalaxy (Fixed voices, Fixed portraits and Ballistic Weapons Reloaded 1.2) I can reupload them here in Moddb.
Do you have discord?
RizZen#2483
Jesus, I didn't expect your return after the purge. Welcome back!
I hope you took matters into your own hand with the unfinished portraits and voices so I won't have to upload them.
Gonna be fun to go back to this once I figure out how to inject Reshade and a decent wrapper with more compatibility into this thing (to add some retro-ish filters). Here's a demo: I.imgur.com
I'm glad you're still alive. I invite you into the modding group. When you like you can upload your stuff here. I'm sure i have it in some download directories - but yet no time to look for and i'm still working on alternate voice packages, too.
hey rizz! love ur mod!
i was wondering if you had the weapons overhaul mod that sean helped make ( and i assume you did too, just says ngng team ) but the latest version of the mod shown here.... Youtube.com
ever since the site when down, of course its the same time i get back into playing MC LOL... fml
thanks man! keep it up
we love you
My optional visual sight and weapon rebalance mod (look into RizZens Downloads) is what you are searching for.
Moddb.com
The mod from sean i wont offer cause it is full of bugs - and my mod above is the perfection of imperfect result SeanLang did...
yes i use ur mod and love it( i do have an issue where a mech with only short range will try to engage long range and just stare at em staying long range unless i tell them to engage Short range)
i just liked the addition of like the srm4-6 / streak 2-6 etc....
Ahh this mod you mean. I never touched it. I will search on my backup harddisk soon - when i find something i will upload it as addon.
Moddb.com
This link should give you access to the optional patches. Keep in mind that i can not offer much technical support for those game changes and i recommend making backups from your game directory before you become in danger to destroy your built.
I had to do my own resolution exes myself.
1366x768 and 1280x768
For the people wanting to know, you just need to search the resolution as a number in the .exe hex mode... you need an hex editor for this. And then change it, of course. But since it's just this, I think they should be included...
You can send them to me. There is currently some more exe stuff that will upgrade the existent resolution package soon.
IronArthur created ALL high resolution files as No-CD exe files!
Moddb.com
The link above shows you my resolution notes. There is explained in detail with screenshots how to change resolutions on MechCommander if needed.
Edit: 1280x768 is standard resolution in the first place and its already in the existent res-package.
Sorry about 1280x768, I added that to another version (a rip). But 1366x768 (or 1360x768) is also a common resolution and not included in that link either. How would I send it to you?
I sent friend invite for pm exchange.
Do you have discord?
RizZen#2483
I didn't receive the invite. BTW I have made a mod for your mod already. If I connect to discord I will message you, I cant' from this computer.
I sent you a friend request on discord I am having problems getting the file to mount properly. Would you be willing to help me with this?

Good Day MCRizZen, I have been following on and off your work on this and it is amazing... Love everything you are doing with it. I do have a problem tho. I can't edge scroll. If I put the mouse to the edge of the screen it will move so slow it basically isn't moving. Like what feels like 1FPS. I can still jump around with the mini map and move the Mechs and everything just fine. Arrow keys have the same effect.
Is there a way to adjust the edge scrolling sensitivity?
Thank you

Please give feedback if it's a solution for you.
Have fun & thx for feedback.
Hey MCRizZen,
Thank you for the suggested fix, and technically it worked, but it brought the game down to like 15FPS or less. Made the game really jerky and more un-playable. After, messing around this is what I have figured out.
- I believe it has something to do with my screen size. I am playing on my 4K-55" TV.
- The higher the resolution, the better the game run. With the 1080P.exe, I do not have this problem at all. Game runs at 100%, but everything is so small and you are so far zoomed out on the battle field that it is impossible for me to play. And as you know, if you zoom in on battle field, you can't edge scroll the map or use arrow keys.
- The lower the resolution the worse it is.
(by resolution I am referring to the different .exe files)
- This also helped me figure out that it has something to do with the camera height. As when the camera (battlefield view point) is on flat ground I do not have this problem. It only occurs when I am trying to scroll over hills and more so mountains. This makes sense with the view being so far away (high) on 1080P that I don't have this problem.
- I also tried on my laptop with a 19" screen, and although I still have this problem it is not as bad. (I did not try the ddraw.dll on the laptop)
- conclusion: There is some kind of collision going on with the "camera" and terrain.
I also tried dgVooDoo to see if that helps. Using dgVooDoo, I can't get the game to run in full screen, and once in battle field, if I try to edge scroll it blips and crashes the game. So that's no good.
For now I have been using the 1024x768.exe as it is the highest resolution (furthest I can get the camera away from battlefield) without everything being too small. (minimap, characters, menu).
Please understand, I am not begging for a fix and your work on this has not gone un-noticed. I do understand that you have posted this as the final revision and don't plan to make anymore updates and/or fixes. I am amazed how much time and effort has been put into this project, and I thank you for everything you have done. This is just my feedback.
P.S. If I am the only one having this problem, I understand it is something on my end.
Thank you again for everything on this game.
No there are several people with that issues.
If it maybe helps: you can although klick on the minimap on the top left that's what I usually do when I play cause with Win10 I have some fps drops when scrolling, too. By using the klick option on minimap that gets better to control.
I will figure out how to change the camera settings next. If it is possible to adjust camera on a higher level it may not collide with any high terrain anymore.
Thank you for that hint.

love it played both to death and downloaded maps back in day, just burned the iso to a disc and run the higher res and still addictive
That is how it should be!

Hello,
I'm crashing consistently on operation 1, mission 13 within 60 seconds on this 4.2 version (did not have this issue on a version from 2018).
Running as admin, 1440x900 res. Is this mission bugged, or is it on my end?
Raven J, Uller J, firestart A, Shadowcat W.
Hawk/Beast/Gator/Lynx
Any ideas what this may be?
This is a mission that usually crashes, when cheats are used. When you had active cheats on i recommend trying the mission without any cheats and staying a bit under the maximum dropweight loadout. Any higher loadout or cheat on screen will result in a crash.
When NOTHING works - i recommend activating cheats and then "Control + W" the mission in order to go on further. I would please you to send me a full bugreport so that i can have a look on it.
Edit: Trying this mission with a lower resolution may although help. I know there are some issues with the mission, when nothing helps i can upload a replacement that defintely works.
Have fun, that's an order, RizZ!
