Welcome to Shadows of Chaos

Hexen II - Shadows of Chaos is a brand new mission pack for Hexen II. Featuring new enemies, revamped classes, a new plot, large maps, and revamped gore. It also features slightly more fleshed out RPG elements thanks to being based on the Game of Tomes mod.

What to expect

Environments based on the whole series. New and old enemies from past games make a return, more puzzles with proper hints, Portal of Praevus features. Explore a new land pulling inspiration from the previous games in the series.

Demo

The release is TBD but a demo version is nearly ready. Will feature 2 relatively large maps and roughly a half hour of gameplay. The demo maps are ready, the release just needs a few features polished before going live.

Special Thanks

Spike - giving Hammer of Thyrion BSP2 support

peeweeRotA - Game of Tomes modification - Site link

Skiffy - Wendigo model (created from his new Quake shambler model)

bloodshot12 Please fix your filenames. Your mod is without manual renaming some files incompatible with the Linux client.

Strings.txt -> strings.txt
Skeleton1.mdl -> skeleton1.mdl
IceWall.mdl -> icewall.mdl
Bishop_proj.mdl -> bishop_proj.mdl
TreeBig.mdl -> treebig.mdl

That would be very nice or at least do not call lowercase file names in your scripts :D

For the Linux folks you can get a bsp2 compatible glhexen2 build for linux from Hexenworld.org
You need to launch the game with +map demo1 and +playerclass 1 - 4 manually. eg: ./glhexen2 -game SoC +map demo1 +playerclass 3

Credits goes to curseofnight thank you!

Just so there's no confusion in case some random people on the interwebs read this, I just ducked twice and found the build, I didn't make it... but you're welcome. :p

Btw, you can also automate a lot things upon load by editing the autoexec.cfg in the SoC(or Hexen II, or any other mod's) folder, but most people who play these old games probably already know that(if not, look at the config.cfg for some valid commands...)

Also, to whom it may concern; don't forget to download the second hub(five maps) by Shadesmaster from here: Mediafire.com gameplay: Youtube.com Sidenote: I *think* this requires the build VortexAcherontic linked above judging by some of Shade's comments(???)

First, go into your SoC folder and rename progs.dat to progs.BAK or just copy and paste it, etc., then unzip SOChub2.zip, and drop the SOC folder within into your hexen II folder and click yes to overwrite. Start the game, open the console, and enter: map voidrealm _cl_playerclass 1 _cl_name badass to start the first map as a paladin named badass... or not.

Well, you got three options: copy and paste existing files and rename them to make dummy copies of the missing files(recommended), overwrite Shadesmaster's progs.dat with Bloodshot12's(first map loads, but will error out later on) or pester Shadesmaster to upload the missing files. He hasn't responded to me about the missing files yet... It's been over a month and a half. :/ (sent him a pm earlier tho)

Edit: Just guessing here, but I believe the missing files are related to the extra weapon slots the lastest build allows. Shademaster mentions the extra slots in one of his comments on youtube. I haven't played much of the second hub yet, truth be told. So many games, so little time. :(

Edit 2: Damn, Shades didn't Precahce archerdecap_lord.mdl, so it errors out whenever you decapitate one. So be mindful to hack at their legs, lol.

I'm not great at installing mods. I need help. What I do to help me remember how to troubleshoot any errors I have, is to write down the help and file it under a large wordpad file of how to run all my mods without bugging the author again. Help?

I do the same thing.

Where are you running into trouble? I may be able to help if you're on Windows. I don't use mac or linux.

There can only be windows LOL. I just don't know where to put it or how to make the damn thing run. I'm better at GZdoom and other mods like Tiberium Wars mods, but this is new to me.

Alright, just unzip the files and drop them into your Hexen II folder. Double-click SoC.bat to run the mod.

Alternatly, you could create a shortcut to gluh2_bsp2.exe, place it on your desktop, right click on it, go to properties and add -game SoC to the target line and play it from there.

Good luck, it's a great mod.

Edit: since you're on Win 10, I would also set gluh2_bsp2.exe to run as admin regardless of whether you use the .bat or run from the .exe itself.

Cant run the Mod:

FATAL ERROR: Mod_LoadBrushModel: maps/demo1.bsp has wrong version number (844124994 should be 29)

Running glhexen2 1.28 on Linux. Is there a newer glhexen2 version I am not aware of?

You have to use the gluh2_bsp2.exe that comes with the mod. It has bsp2 map support.

Edit: I have no idea about linux support though....

Is there a github or gitlab repo I can checkout for Linux support since H2 is open source and so I assume must a modified version be too. :D

Edit: Anyway the mod and the patched h2 exe runs with no issues via wine. Even though I would preffer a linux binary :D Thank you for your help curseofnight :)

You're welcome.

I found a different build called uhexen2-shanjaq. It has linux builds with bsp2 support here: Hexenworld.org

Click on devbuilds at the top. I can confirm the windows 64 bit binaries will load up SoC maps without crashing but I had to force the first map to load with the +map cmd line. Using -game SoC wasn't enough to get the mod to run properly by itself for some reason. Both my Hexen II and SoC folders are complete wrecks though, so that's probably why.

Anyway, if you try it, let me know how it works out.

Btw, you can find a link at the bottom of the first post that contains Hexen II, PoP, plus a f**k ton of mods, maps and other goodies.(Edit: It's a windows .exe installer though)

Thank you that worked :D Now I only need to fix the filenames since the author seems to have mixed uppercase and lowercase and only using lowercase filenames in his scripts :D

Edit: But something seems still not to work with the patches linux native since I can now launch the game with -game SoC also I do see the SoC main menu but that moment I launc hthe game the Praevus mission is started. Well okay than I'll play using wine :D

Edit2: Ah yes forcing the map did helped :D Thank you so much!
