The 054A is the General Purpose Frigate Developed and Built By The Chinese Navy
The class of ship features advanced medium range area defense missile system, the HHQ-16 (Sea Red Flag-16), essentially a Chinese version of the Buk missile system of Russia, the missile system carries 32 missiles with a max range of ~50 km, a top mach number of mach 3, and a high explosive fragmentation warhead of 70kg. The ship carries a light weight phase array 3D radar on its mast, with a max range of ~100km.
The ship carries a pack of 8 C-803 anti-ship missiles with a max range of 300km, a warhead of 165kg and a supersonic dash speed of mach 2 in its terminal flight. The ship also carries Yu-7 ligh weight torpedo for engaging submarines.
With a relatively lower cost at ~260 million USD, compared to the ships of similar role, the French FREMM, at ~500~700 million USD, the ship is designed to be produced in bulk.
In its current form the number of the A variant of the 054 frigate is expected to reach beyond 20, with the B variant, which is a version with emphasis on anti-submarine warfare with new VLS for anti-submarine rockets, just on the horizon. The 054 family of medium frigates would be the backbone of Chinese navy in the near future.
