A very solid update Lee, and I see you continue to think outside the box. Keep it coming sir, I'm hooked.
Like the time period, good luck on this.
I actually smiled as I read this, such a down to earth post makes me want to see this succeed. Hope you follow through on this and don't get discouraged by the rough times you will encounter. Strawberry Ice... love it!
This is quite literally... massive. Between the upgrade to 1.2 and the expansion pack, the game is fast approaching Stellaris levels of intricacies and fun without the silly star-lanes. As an analogy, picture a jeweller who cuts and shapes a jewel over a period of years.
That's great to here, it removes any small advantage that can be gained by going first, similar to the ultimate General games.
I'll be keeping watch on your progress.
Love the time period, and love tactics. A historical campaign will really draw me in far more than just different scenarios, good luck!
I see this described as Turn based, but the video shows real time combat? Can you elaborate.
Not a video, but I can give you a quick description.
You drop out of warp in a loose and random formation, you are not lined up like Infantry during the civil war. The mechanic is IGOUGO but, going first is not a huge advantage as in other games (has to do with weapons range versus starting position).
Fleet leaders can give you very nice boosts in combat and turn a narrow defeat into victory. You also have some cool toys such as weapon overload, shield facing, weapons arcs, and overheat. While there is no tactical terrain to speak of, I am actually amazed at how much tactics do play a role in combat. Most importantly, if you're clever enough, you can pull an Admiral Thrawn and beat superior odds.
Overall, it works extremely well.
You're welcome sir. Eye candy is all well and good , but substance is vital. Today's games often look fantastic but have the depth of a puddle, that isn't for me.
As you say, perhaps emphasising the more human factors are not possible (to the degree you envision or desire), but I applaud the effort nevertheless.
This is your first article, so I'm going to observe for a while, once you post a few more and I feel you pass a certain threshold, I will write a preview of this at Space Sim Central and introduce your concept to an audience that looks for these types of games.
Best of luck, looking forward to your continued progress.
This sounds really interesting. At first glance I almost passed it up but in reading the article I see avery well thought out design that will give a player a true BSG feel. Hope you continue working on this, it seems fresh, and we sorely lack that these days.
Interesting... and a very elegant solution to give both a sense of scale to solar systems (a must in my book, it's the immersion thing) while also not wasting a players game time, (another must).
Looking very forward to your future logs, I'm extremely curious now.
That's good to hear as it looks perfectly poised to fill a specific need, (the "lite" strategy/sim I mentioned above) while also being interesting and engaging at the same time.
I checked your site to get some more info, both on the game and studio, and I noticed that for PC it is only available through steam. No DRM is great, and you have my support for that, but I would love to see it available on other exchanges, GoG, Humble, Itchio, all are available and I don't need to log into a client to play a game. You could also offer it for sale direct through your site, I prefer supporting smaller studios in the way when the option is available as it means they don't need to pass a cut of the proceeds to someone else. As a player/gamer I'm in the minority, (most are fine with steam only), but I assure you I'm not a minority of one.
Very bare bones description on this, what's the point in that? Indiedb has such a huge number of games listed, that such a lack of information does no favours to the dev.
This looks cute, though a bit cartoonish, it seems like it's a "lite" take on sim/strategy game. Why isn't it available as a non-steam game though?
Hi Tensorial, you're welcome, and as I said I want to keep an eye on your progress. I'm curious, I understand what you're trying to accomplish, but I want to know more about the setting, your backstory for Stellar Insurgency. That's the kind of thing that can aid immersion tremendously, and something I may want to report on in the future.
A very solid (if unspectacular) addition to the game. While most studios with similar games tend to milk expansions and introduce a single race only, Praxis is adding two new races in a single module. Considering the base game consists of six races, this is a very smart move.
Having played the base game extensively, I am somewhat concerned about a few things.
In this game, each race has a different preferred biome, up until now, each biome had a single race that prioritised setting colonies there. Now this will be thrown off balance. 4 races will still have minimal competition for the real-estate they prefer, while the other races will have increased competition. Generally I think the competition is actually a good thing, but it must be across the board and not selective if good game balance is to be maintained.
Another concern is the ratio of heroes. Before we saw 41 heroes available for 6 races, or almost 7 heroes available on average per race. The expansion will give 45 heroes available for 8 races, or a bit over 5 per race. I expect some players will complain as these heroes are not only fleet and colony leaders, but act as spies as well.
Overall, the additional Faction rulers, 2 new races, 4 new heroes, new music tracks,etc... make this expansion a must for for current fans.
Now if we could see some additional victory conditions, quest-like events, and a campaign type menace in the future... well That would make ISG the best TBS 4X game to come out in decades.
Good luck with the game. I'm pleased that you broke the news after already doing extensive work on it, that shows a more serious approach as far as I'm concerned. I took the liberty of writing about this at SSC (Space Sim Central), and will drop by your site from time to time to check your progress.
Some welcome additions here that players have been clamouring for, I'm sure it will make what is already a good game even better.
A very ambitious and different iteration of the 4X genre. Perhaps it could be likened to the board game "Diplomacy", but set in space and expanded to include some of the staples we've come to expect in modern games of this type.
Definitely worth a serious look.
This seems to have a Spacecom feel to it, but more evolved. Had that game been a bit better executed it would have have satisfied a niche group of strategy players that want something on the light side. Hope Space Warfare does well and fills that niche.
Just love the concept! So nice to see something fresh these days rather than just another clone of previous games. Good luck with this
Always looking for a good RPG. With so many of them out there, you would think that fans of the genre have a great deal of choice and variety... the problem is though, how many of those games are truly engaging, how many grab the player and pull him/her into an immersive world?
This one though looks promising, I'll be keeping an eye on it.
Thar' great! I'll download it now and give it a spin over the weekend. Also, while I know you have already created a post at SSC, I will write up a preview on the articles there as well.
Great work guys, love what you all have done for the fans of this game. Thank you!
No worries, I downloaded it just fine and tried it out, it's pretty cool so far. It motivated me to write a small preview at Space Sim Central. Looking very forward to the release.
That's great to hear. I'm looking very forward to trying this.
P.S. The demo is still showing the message that it has been archived as an older version, intentional?
I'm intrigued by this. Years ago, I played a little known game that was basically Dungeons and Dragons in space. The wooden ships flying around in space were the best part of it, very imaginative. I'm going to try this out and give it a write up, everything I've seen here so far... has me smiling.
Just saw this at Space Sim Central, best of luck with this, sounds exciting!
No worries. As I wrote, I will introduce Star Zeal to SSC soon and include anything new you've accomplished. Just an FYI, there is quite a bit of interest in this game from 4X fans, they will be happy to know you are progressing. As I wrote long ago, what you are attempting is going to breath some new life to the genre and offer tremendous replay value.
I see you have a new video up, great stuff. With eXplorminate shutting down most of its operations, I'm going to be discussing this game at Space Sim Central now, keep up the great work!
Ok, I'll give this a shot, depending on how it goes, I may give you a write up at SSC and introduce your concept to a wider audience.
