In tough competition for sure, but the focus is so completely different that the niche is what will make it fly. I have no doubts with this one... 'Game Changing' for sure.
i love the concept of it and it is a game changer but im still curious as of how the games/ mods will work would we need to buy or have the game like in steam to play the mod?? or will this be fully for mods and able to play or buy the mods with out having that certain game?
Game changing. It sounds really exciting. I would vote "Desura?" first, but I have a habit of checking out what is the poll about, to make a vote that has a point.
Posting here just in case no one reads this on the other:
"If you can find some way to make it so that players can see who is playing one of these mods or how many people have it installed and generate some type of system for organizing games on the older mods, I can see a future for this, otherwise I'm fine with sticking with Moddb."
Otherwise it just seems like another attempt to make something that links people to games that is extraneous and simply eating up HD space and memory that we could be using to get slightly better fps.
just another platform to make some money
rip off of steam
i support u guys on moddb but ill stick with VALVE any time
they do so much free content for us its crazy not to
I can see why you would go with steam. As far as buying things online I think Steam has the ultimate system. But Steam doesn't have a good database for FREE mods and games. This project could be just another steam but it could also be just what is needed.
If you search for Battlefield 2 Mods on Steam you will find MAYBE 2 mods. If I understand this site like I think I do it will make finding mods 100 times easier than it is now. Battlefield has never been that easy to find mods for, yet there is plenty out there. Filefront did ok for awhile but then their site kept corrupting 50% of the uploads.
I think Desura could be a really awesome program if they do it right. but based off what they have announced it looks to be on a whole different level from Steam.
i hope it will be indie games and mods only, otherwise it would be just a steam rip off and if its indie only it would support the developers because most of them cant get thier games on steam
Yah the compotiion is strong atm but i think if you make this so anyone can upload there mods/games to it and sell games but you recieve some royalties i think this would be really popular.
Well I wouldnt say its game changing, but it sure is great if its aimed at the indie and modding community primarily... So what if its like steam?
Linux is like windows, Linux just open and free, and windows ripps you off... soo, while steam ripps us off, let desura be open and free =] sure it may not reach the popularity steam has, but there will be the faithfull few that will support it all the way =]
I for one prefer mods and indie games over AAA games, too few AAA games worth my play time, and then indie games and mods are always fascinating, so im leaning towards it, Id like to see this become something worthwhile...
I like the GUI, and I love the mod support, but I'm sick of the different Digital Distribution programs and accounts. One thing I loved about the idea is that I would be able to just log into one account, and have a nice way to launch games. But now that there's so many, it's an even bigger hassle as I have to log into the right thing, etc. So right now I'm only using steam and don't bother with non-steam games (unless it's something really big). So my vote goes to "not interested". But best of luck with it.
Interesting, it does focus on things which steam doesn't and if it doesn't do things which are quite annoying at steam it will be successful.
I think we all know that we can trust in moddb to put a lot effort into Desura, making it one of the top platforms. Flexibility, compatibility and the support of the communities can bring Desura to great success.
Perhaps Desura comes with a sleep function. You can start the sleep function manually or when you start a game over the Desura interface it will minimize to a try icon and disable the rendering of websites/flash animations plus everything else that isn't needed, things as checking for updates, downloading news/files. Manually disabling the sleep function must also be a option.
For anyone that thinks Desura isn't a great idea, read this please.
I think some people are missing the point of Desura. It's not there to replace steam, with it you will have automatic downloading of patches for both mods that valve haven't yet decided are worthy of Steamworks, and for mods that don't use the source engine.
For too many people (myself included) patching all their multiplayer mods is a very tedious process in the long run, automatic patching will just make a lot of mods more popular.
Also, I'm pretty sure I read a comment somewhere that said Desura doesn't have to be running while the game is running. This would mean that you could start Desura, which will then download and install the patches automatically, and then you are free to quit the program, run the game from the desktop or from Steam if you want the in-game overlay. You choose.
You have a very valid point. For anyone that tried ModJive it was basically a mod downloader and updater, but it wasn't run well enough. ModJive was setup so you didn't have to leave it running but it notified you for updates.
Where I think Desura will be better than ModJive as far as updating is I see they made a Beta Testing section. My teams mods the beta testing was always the worst because you had to patch A LOT. You're constantly finding issues or something to fix and you would like to make an update but updating every single day get's annoying for your testers. Our current solution is to do most of our testing within our development team then just release a new beta every month or so. Something like Desura that Auto Patches for you could Really help us make quick simple fixes in maybe one or 2 things we missed so then we can get to the game play testing and find things that need to be changed or added on a large scale instead of people repeatedly finding and reporting all the small simple issues that you have already fixed but are waiting to patch with a major change.
Desura is something I look forward to. Whether it fails or succeeds I think it will still have a usefulness for me personally. I really hope this thing is as good as it sounds.
I think its pretty great, there are plenty of mods that require some tweaking and kicking to get it to work on your game, but desura completely skips that **** and installs the mod, patches (hopefully) and any other addons in a single operation so you just need to select the mod you want and bam, desura delivers and all you need to do is play it after its done installing.
Not to mention its going to be a collection of ready and released mods, aka the gems, the top of the crop that you usually search moddb with filters and such. And as they have a crew evaluating the works uploaded there, they will make sure you wont download any crap on the way or stuff that doesnt work.
And on top of that its an awesome chance for modders to get their work there since its all about high quality and it will be very visible and presentable in desura, just like in moddb, but with extra coolness and higher value.
Again for those who dont know what im talking about: Moddb.com
You're in for some tough competition, I wish you all the best!
In tough competition for sure, but the focus is so completely different that the niche is what will make it fly. I have no doubts with this one... 'Game Changing' for sure.
It is certainly interesting and I hope it will succeed and do well.

If you have the game installed it will find it and then allow you to download and install any mods for that game.
I voted game changing but maybe my opinion will be different after using it.. it looks and sounds promising though!
Game changing. It sounds really exciting. I would vote "Desura?" first, but I have a habit of checking out what is the poll about, to make a vote that has a point.
Interesting looking interface. I just hope it isn't clunky as **** like all the other ones.
Its cool, it will make searching for stuff alot easier.
I voted Desura? andthen I checked what it is. Some kind of community, looks pretty good.
Sounds great
there is something i believe that is similar called crosus but imo it doesn't work very well( tried it several times but not lately)
Isotx.com
I intrigued but we will see. Good luck and lets see what you guys do.
google anyone?
I can hardly wait to try it! But, alas, I must. V_V
An elite site for mods... sign me up! what'll be the requisites for a mod to be allowed in such a place?

Didnt hear about Desura until today.
Dont have any opinion yet about it.
I'll stick with steam.. sorry :/
I'm sorry for you.

Desura FTW
Desura? What is that?,what does it mean?
Well I wouldnt say its game changing, but it sure is great if its aimed at the indie and modding community primarily... So what if its like steam?

All the best to you guys!
I will go for Desura on linux as an alternative to steam. But on windows steam will remain my primary way of getting games.
I like the GUI, and I love the mod support, but I'm sick of the different Digital Distribution programs and accounts. I hope it's better than the extremely sucky Steam.
I'm not sure it's gonna be exactly "game changing", but def. interesting!
It's been a long time since I last visited the site, so I guess I am a bit out-of-date...
i voted before i got to see desura -.- should have picked game changing =(
This could mean a lot for developing developers who want to market their games...
aka me...
"gah, not another one" as in: not another poll i have no opinion on.

I picked interesting because I have yet to try the program out so I can't really say it's game changing. The summary of it sounds good though.
It is look very interesting.

All hail desura! : D
Desura looks interesting in my opinion.
Well i have to say you guys should be proud of 2 things
1. Creating somin that might Give Steam a run for its money
and 2. Being able to keep a secret project SO secret that 50% of the community doesnt know what the hell ur talking about
lol
props guys ♠
there missing 1%?
WOULD THAT 1% HURRY UP AND VOTE!
Trying to compete with Steam? Uh oh. Didn't Windows Live, try that?
this is gonna be ****(in a bad way),im sure of it
50% dont know about it eaven after the big reveal
and another 6% say "gah not another one"
Never heard of it.
Okay, so Desura will just redistribute the mods?
What's the point?
@hardriver
not right now...its 100%
It just seems like Steam but for mods - even though Steam already has the ability to add your free mods if you talk nicely to Valve.
