I'll second that. Try to imagine FEAR as a coop game. It will be a no game :). MP and Coop have their strong points too. But the best story and game immersion you'll get it in SP. In SP, it's like in a movie where you're the main character.
It has a single player, but its so survival based that its nearly impossible to win without some decent AI or good players watching your back. There IS not way to turn Left 4 Dead into a single player experience that doesn't have easily replaceable AI at your side at ALL times. Basically lining it up as a coop.
For me, Single - Player is first -- because it really puts you in control of the world around you -- with fictional characters, performing acts of their own...over multi - player combat, which [don't get me wrong] can be immersive, yet, it does not feature that same feeling of absolute control, within a fictitious world, so to speak...
Co-op can be just as immersive as Single player when you play with a dedicated group of players. Left 4 Dead is a decent example. OblivionOnline will be a good example as well :D
Synergy, and other such coop mods and games can really make you feel like your there when everyone is reacting to whats going on in the game, and not just talking about random shite all the time. LAN helps really, but you can have a great Coop experience that would be far more satisfying then a SP experience, for the fact that you know you couldn't have got where you are without the dedicated teammates you had alongside you watching your back the entire way there. Diablo 3 will be another epic (SP and Coop, same thing, bter experience online :D)
If I could do multiplayer I would still prefer singleplayer, the selling point of a game for me is the singleplayer + the story, like Bioshock or Deus Ex or the C&C games.
Story is definatly a selling point, but almost any single player game that also features coop can be even more enjoyable playing with a good friend who is as into the game as you are :D. (Think Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, or CoDW@W)
i'd say multiplayer combat because its more challanging because in single player the computer is too easy to beat, except from the odd game where you die in 1 or 2 shots.
Toplist
1. MultiPlayer Coop, Preferably Stealth or Teamwork like in Rainbow six.
2. SinglePlayer, Rush in and start filling the room with led.
3. MultiPlayer Combat, as long as there is vehicles...
Coop - for team-play and knowing there's an intelligent human being watching your back and not a limited AI who may or may not act sufficiently in a bad situation. Downside, online with random people, who are reading the manual as they play it seems.
SP - for SOMEWHAT immersive gameplay that's usually based so that only one character can reign supreme. Downside (for FPS the most), SP is it always makes your character seem like some kind of walking tank super soldier, but other then some are great.
MP:C - For the satisfying feeling of beating someone who mgiht be as good if not better then you, alone or with a large group of people against another large group. MASSIVE ACTION GAME looks like it could be the top Teambased MMO style war game of all time. It fits into both MP Coop and MP Combat.
I definitly always love multiplyer combat but i should start playing more singleplayer games as i really love them only problem is most these days are really short and you get more fun out of multiplyer.
co-op is fo n00bs who dont have the skillz to kill other n00bs in multiplayer. single player is ok but i never play through to the end because theres always a section i get stuck in and dont know what to do. and at this point i will close the game and never open it up again. ever. i never finished hl1 for this reason. i also refuse to change difficulty settings below the veteran or hard settings usually. because otherwise enemies are too easy.
multiplayer fo teh win!
exept portal portal pwns all
It's funny that there seems to be a rite of passage with multiplayer combat games. If you don't spend enough time trying to hone a 'skill' rather than just being able to pick it up and simply have some fun, you're instantly a n00b. I'd much rather be able to strategically play in single-player or coop than flaunt 40+ hours of in game time in everyone else's faces. I put singleplayer because I can set it down whenever I feel I've played enough and I'm disappointing no one.
I like Multiplayer combat. Preferably team vs. team like Battlefield or UT3 Team Vehicle Capture the Flag. I'm just competitive and like keeping stats and bragging. Sadly I get little time to brag while getting fragged all the time :P
I think single player games (single player ONLY) sold alone are... ripoffs. Unless they have a lot of replayability or tons of content (see Neverwinter Nights 2) or are around 25 bucks or less. It's a scam to pay 40 bucks for what, 20-60 hours of gameplay? I get twice that out of most online games (like Battlefield).
What if singleplayer had stat tracking similar to Audiosurf, where there's a global high-score board that has some simple stat tracking with obvious head to head competition... but it's in an FPS.
Multiplauyer Combat lets you test your skills agains others and see who fits better into circumstances. In all kind of games; shooters, strategic...
Coop and Single Player are good too. Coop is better than Single Player, because it adds a bunch of new elements like group organization, thinkiing, acting, agreeing, etc. Gruop Versus Group with an "AI" "neutral" component (like a comp/monster that atakcs everyone, or one that can be everyone's ally) is the best and more complete form of play a game.
i like to be immersed in the gameplay which is so hard to do these days when you have 10-year-olds screaming into their microphones in multiplayer.
singleplayer ftw!
Coop for the win, and you all know it!
Nah, singleplayer for sure. It is a much more artistic form (and that's not visually speaking).
I'll second that. Try to imagine FEAR as a coop game. It will be a no game :). MP and Coop have their strong points too. But the best story and game immersion you'll get it in SP. In SP, it's like in a movie where you're the main character.
Left 4 Dead is pretty much like movie. And its COOP.
Ok ... now turn L4D in a rich SP experience ;)
Don't get me wrong, I like all of them, but as a game modder and consumer, I am more attracted by SP.
gonna have to agree, coop ftw!
Herr_Alien

There is a FEAR coop game its called FEAR Combat Warfare, its pretty nice if your playing with someone you know! :)

Agree 110%. Single player emerses you in the environment. The others are good too, but its SP FTW!

FEAR AS A COOP GAME!!!!
GENIUS
No disagreements here... It has to be co-op...
Hmm, Co-op most certainly, with a good team, and some good friends, unbeatable experience to be had
Dave
Same here...cus im a scaredy cat...LOL
multiplayer is always fun. but it's just so; spawn, run, shoot, die, repeat to infinity.
singleplayer ftw
Coop ftw. Singleplayer is good too,but is always better to play sp games in coop with friends. Multiplayer combat is fun too,but can get boring.
Could say the same about most SP experiences.
I love multiplayer, just for the community aspect.
If I could do multiplayer I would still prefer singleplayer, the selling point of a game for me is the singleplayer + the story, like Bioshock or Deus Ex or the C&C games.
^^^^
post above me has valid points

Multiplayer combat rules!!!
What could be better then killing off your friends and Laughing in Their Face, also repeatedly saying they are S***Eaters.
Thats Golden.
i'd say multiplayer combat because its more challanging because in single player the computer is too easy to beat, except from the odd game where you die in 1 or 2 shots.
Ouf this is tough, I like all! I guess I play more single player games than any other, but I am really enjoying Left 4 Dead co-op at the moment.
very evenly split poll at the moment. I used to think I loved coop the most, but I dunno. L4D rocks but it just feels too repetative...
I went for multiplayer combat because I enjoy not playing against ai.
Coop the best game mode ever!!!! *vote*
tactical coop teamplay with commander :O

hey stonecold im good in team vs team modes too, but coop is just most fun and you dont need so many players
lol i'm only taking the ****... i just like good games. l4d is awesome
singleplayer.
Coop Cod5 nazi zombie mode ftw :D
Singleplayer of course!
Yeah but the problem is when u do that too much and get bored =/ . Im pretty much sick of css,i played it a lil too much.
co-op the best :)
ECHO! ECHO!

Then the devil better put on his jacket and ice skates, a game dev got an original idea ;)
But, yes, that would be awesome, and I would probably buy it.. being it was actually gun :P

multiplayer coop rly? One of the few times I've been surprised by the poll results.
Multiplayer Combat. Competitive Gaming.
Coop
So rare these days.
i like to be immersed in the gameplay which is so hard to do these days when you have 10-year-olds screaming into their microphones in multiplayer.
singleplayer ftw!
