It's been a couple of months since we last posted a news-update on moddb, that doesn’t mean the development of Infinity has stopped. We are making a lot of progress and today we can show you something a lot of people have asked for, something space-game fans have been waiting for for years. I’m happy to present you a video of procedural gas giant rings (asteroid placement ) in Infinity:

Keep in mind, this is WIP and doesn't represent the final result. It's just per-vertex lighting with a diffuse texture and both star field and planet are missing.

It’s interesting to know that every planetary ring system has millions of asteroids in it. Every asteroid has a unique ID, in other words: you can zoom out a million kilometers away and come back at the same place; the asteroid will be at the same place (assuming it was motionless) and look the same. The asteroids are not static, they rotate and follow an elliptical orbit.

For more information about gas giant rings and shadowing in Infinity, check out the latest update in Flavien Brebion Development Journal.
