While I provided guidance and development of the initial texture assets, I told Doci to get all freaky with this one and he did not disappoint. The intricate details of the veins covering the ship really helps deliver the feeling that these ships were grown out of the long tendrils that hang from the sides of the large capital ships of the Vong. Excellent work Doci.... I love this.

While that is indeed, very cool, and probably not worth changing. I think the cockpit is supposed to be opaque, and then there's the head tentacle thing that the pilot puts on that connects the fighters senses to their brain.

Opaque means not transparent, not “see through”

Our model is an opaque black canopy with a luster shine, much like Smokey quartz, which we are interpreting to be a crystal canopy that can recess into the ship for exit, while being translucent enough for the pilot to see through, yet the pilot probably relies on the ship’s sensory organs or the gravitational anomaly detections of the engine Dovin Basal

Pilots are able to exit fighters, so a moveable crystal shell is sorta believable, and all the comics painted the canopy black too

I know what opaque means, I meant that the cockpit probably shouldn't be an easily visible part of the fighter at all, except maybe for the shape.

That said, it's been a while since I read the books, and I never read the comics at all. So if I'm wrong I'm wrong.

Clarifying more for sake of others, but yeah, it is a hard challenge trying to recreate what people expect to see from all the lore and then justify with realistic explanations... we just try our best ya know.

...it would be cool if it was written that the vong sacrificed their pilots by permanently grafting them to the ship, such that one could not live without the other... that would have been dark and awesome... missed opportunity there authors...

But then the Good Guys™ couldn't steal the things. There's at least two books where the plot would have been completely short circuited if it wasn't possible for random people to just walk in and fly the things.

Description

Organically grown for pure, evil, destruction...

Just slightly smaller in length than an X-Wing, the Coralskipper was as fast as an A-wing, and armed with the equivalent of 4 light Mass Driver cannons. An advanced version of the fighter with tentacles and grutchin sacs was also developed, known as the Yorik-Grutta, which could deploy grutchin minefields capable of damaging fighter squadrons and light capital ships.
