A new Total Conversion for the upcoming Neverwinter Nights 2: The Otherside Chronicles.

The Otherside Chronicles, or shorter Otherside or OS, has evolved from a 2d game project into the TC it is today. We started the 2d Project somewhere in '03-'04, with various changes we got to the TC we are working on now.

The following information is for the complete campaign, which will be released in different acts. The development status, all screenshots, etc. are for the first act. This first act is an introduction act, and is available for download

- Features

Total new world containing 8 Kingdoms each with a rich history and its own culture -
The Otherside Chronicles take place in Arryth, a total new world which sets itself apart from the Forgotten Realms and D&D. Arryth consists out of 8 kingdoms each with their own cultures, history and traditions, with settings differing from woods to jungles, from icy mountains to now ruined lands hulled in constant chaos storms.

Kingdoms:
- Alauria
- Giant's Pass
- Vernyi
- Aeslia
- Naesurm
- Ilrion
- Avadur
- Ryn'skel
More info on these at the Game Info section.

Unique Quests -
The TC will contain over 30+ sidequests which are completely optional and you are free to do at almost any time. These sidequests will have no connection to the main storyline or the guild quests, but will learn more about Arryth and its inhabitants. The guilds, more on these later, will also grant various tasks and quests to the player.
Aside from these, the TC will contain a large storyline. The storyline will tell about the dark times coming to Arryth and how all is linked to the mysterious portal of Rynal. What lies on the other side?

Joinable guilds -
Join one of the guilds and gain access to various facilities (Libraries, weapon smiths ...) and carry out numerous quests.

The Frozen Land's Mages -
Many adventurers seek the mysteries of magic. The mages of the Frozen Land are known to be very skilled and eager to pass their knowledge to others. The Nyic guildhall is their main base, and is known to have the largest book collection of Arryth in its library.

The Adventurers Guild -
A perfect home for the brave and adventurous ones. The guild is known for its quality armor and weaponry. The guild has no main base, but has many smaller halls across the continent.

The Black Hand -
A guild for those that would rather stick to the shadows. This mysterious guild is known to have protected rogues and thieves, though also followers of dark magic have been given refuge in their halls. The locations of these halls are unknown.

Unique History -

In the beginning, there were only 3 kingdoms: Ryn'skel, home of the humans supported by their mighty heroes; Teran, home of the goblinoids and Nyreld, home of savage demons. As expected, a war broke out between the 3 lands. One that did not resulted in victory but in death. In the tower of Rynal, the capital of Ryn'skel where the final battle between the demons, goblinoids and humans was fought, the humans were in the losing camp and saw only one option left. They went up all the way up to the tower, where they casted a spell from the Forbidden Book. The explosion following destroyed everyone and everything in its radius and caused a negative energy portal to be created. Only one tribe of goblins survived and retreated themselves into the inhospitable mountains of Avadur. The demons suffered from the heaviest losses. Their whole land was destroyed and completely swallowed, creating the Inner Sea. Life in Arryth was as good as gone. This period of war and destruction is now addressed by many as the 'Chaos'.

Woah, finally back internet. Sorry for the little delay :)

Anyway, I've stopped focussing on sidequests for the moment since we now have about 30 of these now, not including the main quest or any of the guildquests. All way more interesting then the regular 'go there, kill x of these and return'. I've already gave a small teaser in one of the previous Dev Journals, so you can expect most of the quests to be quite interesting. We have disappearances, historians looking for old documents in shipwrecks, mysterious murders, raids on demon clans, etc. 'Screams of the Night' is my favorite one, it takes place on a tiny island North of Alauria called the 'Isle of Ilista' and has one small village called 'Najral'.At daytime, everything seems pretty normal. At night, the small village gets woken up by storms, terrible screams and murdered people on the strees. Maybe I'll tell more about it later.

So, I promised to talk about one of the features OS will contain. One of these features are wars.

Wars? Uh-huh, I don't quite like the stories where you are 'the one' and you (and only you) can save the world. Seriously. When there is going to be a war (triggered throughout the MainQ, you can't 'miss' a war) the watchtower of that area will be lit. This way, all allies of that kingdom can assemble their troops and ride to help. Now, don't go imagening scenes from LOTR or the 'Total War' games. It's impossible at this stage to have hundreds of critters rushing through without having serious lag or other problems, at least with the NWN2 engine. Besides, it wouldn't be fun either just pure chaos. I have no idea on how many creatures we're going to have on screen at the same time but with a few smart respawn spots we can make it seem like hundreds of enemies keep rushing through that one gate. Sound will also be quite a factor to give people the feeling there actually in a war, but I doubt that's going to be a problem. Through the game (the mainQ) there will be +/- 4 wars with 2 of them you'll actually participate in and play from the start to the end. It's obviously not a huge amount, but keep in mind this is still just a TC and eich extra feature will cost more time. And time it'll take to create the whole world of Arryth. Don't worry though, Open Alpha and Beta releases will be available for download throughout the development procces. I can't guess how long it will take, it depends on to much things. Maybe after a bit of actually modding with the new engine I can try a small guess.

Yeah, Obs CS is pretty buggy. You have to have a good machine to run it properly and even then problems can still come up with it.

Yup, NWN2 now. *sigh*
Evolving from game engine to game engine, I thought OS would finally be created on Oblivion's engine but alas, to those continuous bugs, crashes, limitations and Bethsoft not giving any patch support for their toolkit it seems that I've misplaced my trust with them. *deep sigh*

With the information I know and past experience with the Aurora Toolkit, I think it's fair to say that Obsidian's new toolkit will provide a more user-friendly environment and, to my suprise actually, a more powerfull editing possibility. I'm sure our new engine is a safe choise.

No worries, check the 'Timeline after Chaos' in the Game Info section. You'll learn there that 7 of the eight kingdoms have completly recovered themselves from the destuction caused by the Chaos. The last kingdom hasn't, but since it's been so many era's it won't be as post-apocalyptic as Guildwars' Ascalon.

I like it. As loong as you don't make it a scarred land (im thinking post-searing Guild Wars) But i guess its already thought of. But just wanted to make it clear :P Mod's like theese are the sole reason i bought Oblivion on my PC and not the XBox 360! :)
