Description

Towards the end of 2374 the Dominion War had settled into a steady but vicious grind. Dominion and Federation fleets clashed, territory was won and lost, and both sides tasted victory and defeat. However, this prolonged constant warfare was something the Federation could not afford. Suffering mounting casualties and shortages of ships and manpower, while the Dominion's resources seemed almost endless, Starfleet knew that defeat was inevitable unless the balance was tipped in their favour.

Such a balance shift occurred near the end of 2374, with the apparent assassination of Romulan Senator Vreenak, seemingly at the hands of the Dominion. A proud and vengeful people enraged by the murder of one of their most influential Senators, the Romulan Star Empire declared war on the Dominion soon after.

The Romulans entered the war in spectacular fashion, striking no less than 15 Dominion positions along the border in a matter days and sparking celebrations throughout the Federation. When the Romulans formally joined forces with the Federation and Klingon Empire a few months later, the great powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants stood united for the first time in history, and were finally in a position to go on the offensive. Launching a major invasion on the Cardassian Chin'toka system, the Alliance struck deep into Dominion territory.

Also meeting great success on other fronts, the Dominion was eventually forced from the majority of their captured territory, returning the front line to the Cardassian border. The Dominion, however, was far from defeated and put up fierce resistance, stalling the offensive and making the Alliance pay dearly for every system.

Despite the losses, however, for the first time victory against the Dominion seemed possible.
