How do I make more money in MISERY? I've tried mutant hunting, artifact hunting, killing bandits and mercs and selling their stuff. Nothing is providing me with an adequate income. At this rate, I'm never going to be able to get to Pripyat or get better equipment. Any advice?

I recently started playing MISERY 2.1.1 (after not playing MISERY since 1.0; I've beaten CoP a couple of times unmodded in the past and once with MISERY), what I've done was save as much money as I can early on to get a SEVA Ecology suit, the battle-hardened one, for ~88k. I got to this primarily by completing missions NPCs gave out, particularly Beard's, who pays well. I also purchased the hi-end cooker (for ~9k) and gas (~1.6k for 8 liters, or uses) so I could cook my own food from hunting and save money on buying food. Yes, you get a slight dose of radiation from your cooked food, but your body should be able to process it and, over the course of a few hours, will go away. Note that you'll want to keep your character full (no hunger icon), as it's the only way to naturally regen your health.

Once I got the SEVA suit, I went artifact hunting. This was particularly challenging as I couldn't carry both the suit and another set of armor (in my case the starter overcoat and head wrap) without heavy encumbrance. Therefore, my strategy was to pick an artifact spot in advance and head there in my SEVA suit, being sure to avoid confrontation so as to not damage the suit (outside of normal wear-and-tear from simply using it). I have two artifact holders (one I purchased, the second you can get from the two stalkers by the boiler anomaly for free) so once I managed to scoop up two artifacts, I'd run back to Beard and sell them, netting an average of ~12k / run. Note that I, too, haven't left Zaton, but I'm sure once you do, artifact values will jump alongside their rarity in the other areas.

In summary... hunt to save money on buying food, complete Beard's missions to get lots of startup funds, save for a SEVA suit so you can go artifact hunting.

Can someone please give me some advice? I'm tired of having barely enough money to buy food.

*EDIT* Nevermind!
