Whenever I head off near The Swamp, my game crashes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

How close do you get? Does it happen when you approach it from different angles?

Switch distance isn't about memory over load, it's about nearby NPCs causing crashes etc and lowering it means that they are only simulated and not part of the current alife, therefor unable to cause crashes.
The wild area at the north west of Zaton, behind and connecting the Sawmill with the Swamps is a massive spawning ground for...well, everything! Psuedogiants and Chimera are known to spawn there and both are prone to causing crashes when animating with other NPCs. I get very little freeze ups in my game but when I do, they're random in so much that I can reload and circumvent the crash. It's almost always caused by NPCs or mutants and I try to kill them before they become a problem, although I have SD at 500 so if I don't identify any culprit mutants/npcs, I assume they're nearby and I wait a bit before going there again.
So - I recommend either visiting the swamps with SD at 10 or going via either the Antenna Complex as you get a nice view of the area and can identify mutant problems and kill them before they crash or via the Sawmill, lower part, see if there's a Duty squad getting mauled there and try to aid them before they die and crash the game.
If all fails, you might have something more serious, I'd recommend getting your crash log up here and see if someone more technically minded can help.

Try lowering your alife to 50, it might be caused by a faulty rotten zombie/controller at the nearby saw mill, krug antenna or iron forest. Then seek out the faulty guy kill him and save and raise the alife to original setting.

Getting near the border of izumdrodnye or w/e that village name is causes a crash. there was a pseudogiant in between shevchenko and skadovsk too which wasn't there before. It was causing crashes whenever i shot more than 10 rounds into it. A few IEDs managed to solve that problem but the crashes still occur. Also, I don't know how to change my Alife. Any ideas? Will going to the next area solve my issue?

1. exit game and go to gamedata\configs\alife.ltx, open it with notepad
2. change value of 'switch_distance' param, the first number, to 50 and save document
3. go into the game
4. After u kill the guy who is making problem(well kill everything that spawns while u search the area) do hard save and then switch back alife to original value

Yeah, I'd follow Nyayr's instructions, he's a little more technically clued up than me. The gist is simple - there's a naughty NPC or mutant causing crashes. Kill them before they can crash. If you can't kill them on time, follow BockoPocko's instructions to relegate them to memory whilst you visit the swamps.
