He looks too skinny...
He is too skinny. The ashigaru are people unfit for frontline duty, but good enough for combat in general. Thus they get ranged mortars to fire from behind front lines.
In a sense, someone wearing such huge glasses isn't exactly good enough for combat in general.
But the concept of the unit is really good.
They are screens for the in-built nanocomputer used for targeting that mortar.
I actually really dig that idea.

The intent of the joke was like a name tag for a department store employee. The Tanaka was chosen because it is part of a running gag in the Fast Karate for the Gentlemen podcast.
Compared to how the Ordos Mortar Infantry worked in Emperor: Battle for Dune, this appearance is a fitting one. The mortar infantry proved very weak by themselves, and were of course easy to destroy when under-supported. All the Ordos infantry looked the same, so the only real difference was their voice, which bore a distinctly younger or inexperienced quality.

This is supposed to be a new unit: previous comments would tell you that this would be a mortar infantry unit.
