An expansion/overhaul mod of epic proportions, with entirely rebalanced gameplay, expanded factions, new gametypes, graphical overhauls, and five new factions; stealth-based Confederate Revolutionaries, tower defense-inspired Atomic Kingdom of China, economy-focused Mediterranean Syndicate, DotA-esque Order of the Talon and spammy Electrical Protectorate.

I know Sketch is making a tactics game similar to battle-tech, But let's see if we can't make a traditional tabletop RPG. I'm pretty much building this from scratch(with the help of you guys). By RPG, I mean something like Dugeons and Dragons, World of Darkness, etc. So, let's get to the basics; Should we use an existing system, or make one from sctrach(I personally lean toward the latter). Would it be feasible/possible for the PCs to be from different factions? What would be a basic plotline?

Well, perhaps the first thing you should consider would be what the scope of the game is. What characters would you be playing? Line soldiers wouldn't be that great, because much of combat isn't that interesting, AFAIK ("Okay, you continue firing at the building so the other squad can advance. Roll your suppression die for a tenth time").

Perhaps my daydreams about a Paradox MMORPG can actually help. In my view, RPGs are best done with small groups of skilled people striking at vulnerable points. In DND, you go into the evil tyrant's dungeon, you don't join with other bands and fight them in open battle. So in my mind, Paradox the MMORPG would best be done with intelligence/special ops, with ACIN, KGB, Delta Rangers, and SPIDER being the player factions, going into enemy strongholds and disputed areas. This also has the benefit of allowing each character to be more individualistic; there's no set uniform for a Spy.

Anyways, I'm not likely to be involved with your project or anything, so you can do what you want, but this might help you decide.

I think, surprisingly, that the Paradox world makes for an excellent setting to do a Genius: The Transgression type RP. The Allies have no shortage of Geniuses, most with High Obligation; the Protectorate make for excellent Wonders gone wrong; and the Talon can serve as Clockstoppers and/or Hunteresque folks extremely well.

Also because the Paradox world really does have no shortage of SCIENCE in it's ranks.

@PL: Well, the thing being spies is that the PC's are very unlikely to work as a group, but that might be just what you want for a Paranoia type RPG. I was more thinking along the lines of faction sub organizations: etc: the Confederate Gold Panthers.

@PA: Well, that really sounds like more of an Allied Centric campaign. But then again, there's practically little chance of guys from 5 different organizations hostile to each other not trying to strangle each others throats. Perhaps there the other factions should get their own little proposed ideas: etc, the Soviets.

On the contrary, spies often work in teams. Would you want to go into a Protectorate base by your own self?

Anyways, this isn't helping you find a system, so I'll stop.
