We haven't decided much about it but currently, here is some info about it:

: ()nline is an MMOFPS set in the HL2 Universe. It will be hosted on a dedicated server bought by Z0mb!e. It might have a few new weapons but will hostly use normal hl2 weapons because of its setting. It will have 3 classes:

Rebel:

Will be able to use Crowbars, SMG's, Rocket Launchers, AR2's, Both types of Pistols and Grenades. They can also give orders to Special NPC Rebels avalable at Rebel Training Centers.

Citizen:

Will be able to use Crowbars, AR2's, Both types on Pistols, Wall Mine, shotgun and Crossbow. They also have the access to houses, where they can hide from Striders roaming the streets and safety from combine.

Combine:

Combine's main goal is to kill as many humans as possible. They can use Stunsticks, AR2's, Grenades, Wall Mines and The Small Pistol. One special feature of the Combine is, if a Combine manages to get close to a Human, if the Combine Stunsticks them, they are captured and turned into a combine for 2 days.

One thing about this mod is that it wont have leveling up. As leveling up makes it unfair and people with High Levels will easily kill new players.

Assistants:

Players can get assistants, or pets, which will aid them in combat. Combine will be able to keep Vortigant slaves as pets, rollermines, manhacks and scanners. Humans will be able to keep friendly Vortigants, tamed Antlions and rejiggered Rollermines.

Vehicles:

We might add pilotable vehicles but they may make it unbalenced. More info soon.

Everything here is NOT FINAL it may be changed or added to. A website is being made for it currently.

Delayed

News

: ()nline has been delayed until the release of EP2. The reason for this is because EP2 will have many new large environment processing features, not currently avaliable to the SDK. Also the portals from the new SDK might be helpful for some aspects of the mod.

Ohh, you see, I thought this would be an MMO RP of HL2. Either way it still sounds cool.

Maybe you should look at other MMO games to hep you get off the groud. A popular one, WoW, is a good a example. You should have two factions (obviously the Rebels and Combine), then the races.

Rebels: Common rebel, citizen, refugees, medics

Combine: Civil protection, Overwatch Soldier, Overwatch Sniper, Stalker/Hunter (which ever)

And of course vehicules everywhere in the spawns. If you need an idea person, I'm your dude. Email me at delmontejuicebox@hotmail.com

Believe me the sound of this mod is intriguing. But I must warn you of a few problems and a few posible solutions to these problems.

_________________________________________________________
Problem 1: Problem with single server setup
---------------------------------------------------------
Having one game server to run a single extremely large map would be futile Though the max map size is pretty large notice even in hl2 single player maps were kept down to a reasonable size.

Solution 1: More servers running multiple zones

Create multiple zones running on multiple servers. I would defiantly not advise running more then 1 zone at max per server machine. But then again I could be wrong later on in development you can experiment with running more then 1 zone per machine but don't put the project on hold if it doesn't work out so well. I understand maintenance costs for server machines are a bit high but if you can show a worthy interest into the completion of this mod. I am sure finding people to donate the use of a server will be fairly easy provided you offer advertising or some kind of compensation to the provider. Whether it be in-game advertising, website advertising, etc...

Example: you will need to create multiple zones such as City 17 North, City 17 South, the canals, Etc...

_________________________________________________________
Problem 2: Maximum Player Count
---------------------------------------------------------
The max number of players on one game server is 32. I am not sure if this can be increased. But it would not be advised. I don't know if you play allot of hl2:deathmatch but even on a awesome system playing on a bad *** server with a full game of 32 players can be extremely bandwidth taxing. I have seen some servers run great with 32 but it is rare.

Solution 2: Keep 32 max players.

Using the zone based system like the one described above you can accomplish this very easy. 32 people is really a good number and is probably best for a zone based system. Although if it can be done I would recommend experimenting with raising the number. but don't let the project get held up by this problem. if anything you can finish the project before tackling this problem using the zone method.

_________________________________________________________
Problem 3: Maximum Level size
---------------------------------------------------------
although the maximum level size for multiplayer maps is pretty big creating a multiplayer level of that size is defiantly not advised the lag issues will be immense. The standard size of HL2:Deathmatch maps is defiantly not the size I would recommend. I would recommend bigger to reduce the number of servers that will be needed.

Solution 3:Set up a stress test team

Create multiple deathmatch maps of various size and prop count. Find a stress test team with good stable systems for running hl2. Start with one server on the smallest map size you created with a full game of 32 players. play around and find get a collective opinion of how well it ran. Increase the map size and prop count and repeat the process. Once you found the reasonable size start designing the world with this kept in mind. If you want create a few zones bigger and more prop filled and make that a high bandwidth zone but make sure it is not the only way to get to another low bandwidth zone.

Problem 4: The Vehicle problem
---------------------------------------------------------
Ok if you are planing to set this game in the hl2 universe. With a war between combine and rebels. You cant leave out the vehicles. Especially the strider's, and gunships/drop ships. Yes I am aware of the balance issues. But you can't accurately depict the struggle for rebel control without the massively overpowered combine forces vehicles. Team work will be essential for rebels. Besides even in the single player campaign you saw how well a group of rebel soldiers using teamwork could take down a strider. I see 2 or more possible solutions to this problem.

solution 4a: create AI contorted units.(not advised)

You can create AI controlled strider's, gunships, etc... The Reason I don't advise this is because in the single player campaign vehicle ai tended to reduce performance. but if this method is the one you chose. Make each zone have vehicle patrol routs no more then 2 of each type per zone.(experiment with this number). Think about the setting for this mod it will probably be in the future after the events of hl2. And the release date for a mod of this size will probably be long after the release of all 3 episodes of hl2. I am sure by the end of those 3 episodes the rebels will have developed some method of fighting back against the combine.

Solution 4b: Create pilotable vehicles

I have seen some really good pilotable strider mods. And strider's were probably the most complex vehicles in the game to create so adapting the other vehicles will be fairly easy I presume.

_________________________________________________________
Problem 5: Copyright issues
---------------------------------------------------------
Please Please DO NOT LET THIS MOD BE A VICTIM OF VALVE SHUTTING THE PROJECT DOWN.

Solution 5: Discuss the project with valve before starting the main work. You may even find help with the design of this mod from inside valve if you play your cards right. develop your idea to the point where Valve will see potential. (Valve actually was thinking about turning the Dystopia mod into a paid mod) Though this may have an undesired effect of possibly becoming a paid mod. Having Valves backing on this would be an ace in the hole.
----------------------------------------------------------

I must say you have a brilliant idea. And I am sure allot of these issues have crossed your mind. I will post more problems as I see them and possible solutions. For now if you have any questions about this comment please feel free to email me cgeisler515@yahoo.com.
