The "New Horizons" mod for the 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean game by Akella is a continuation of the famous Build mod series. Developed as Pirates of the Caribbean Build 14, "New Horizons" continued where Build 13 left off, adding more new content than ever before.
Work is continuing on making storms better. Now you can't coast along but have to actively sail your ship. This storm lasted eight days game time and the ship was pretty much all used up.
The pointy bars on the capstan wouldn't be attached when it's not being used.
Good storm, though. Very violent. :D
Is it possible to adjust the lighting? I think in a storm everything would look much darker.
Got to agree the lighting is a tad off even during the day as a storm as it is on top of the ship it would not be that bright.
The newer ships get darker at night, but this is an old one that does not. The crew is the same day or night.
What do you mean it doesn't get darker? That ship doesn't have any lighting bugs that I know of. Are you saying that's generally what happens with all old/stock ships?
Before I made that post I looked at some screenies, and yes, the decks of some ships get darker at night and some ships don't. Unless I'm seeing the reverse lighting bug which makes some ships look darker from certain angles.
Maybe it's down to the materials the models use. I'm pretty sure the ship in the video does in fact use a material which causes problems. Looks like we'll need to identify more like this one and do a few re-exports.
I am going to post some screenies. Comments welcomed.
True. This an old ship model that has some things that aren't as realistic as the newer ships.
The video shows both day and night cycles. This storm lasted a long time. And yes, it can be adjusted. There are dark and light storms as well as day and night. I have one old screenie where the ship is just a shadow in the storm.
Cool, so this is a heavy storm, but not the heaviest? I like the improved lightning, don't know what's different with it, but the whole storm feels more violent.
The craziest thing is when you are getting into storm during a sea fight with another ship. I had two of my ships sailing against a pirate convoy and suddenly we are in this heavy weather and a twister circles right next to the ships. God - that was scary. I actually lost a ship there, but at least got away alife. Love this kind of variation. Twister was the highlight, so far, but I think some kind of wale-monster or tentacle attack would add some more insanity. Maybe mark a zone with "There be monsters", like they did on the old maps ;)
Anyway, cool game, great updates - always! I'd like to know if there is any chance for coop, or online play, in the future. That would really put the lid on.
Well we do have some kraken tentacles for use in scripted events, even though they're not animated. I don't know about marking an area of the world map as 'dangerous waters', but I'm pretty sure we can use the kraken in storms.
As for online play, that's really not possible for this game, I'm afraid. It might be possible for AoP2, by modifying AoP1's online code, but it would still be extremely difficult and require many more capable modders.
It's possible to trigger a Kraken attack in the game, but there's only one rare instance in the Jack Sparrow storyline where it actually happens.
