Heroes of the West is a mod created by the RO2 community which brings the RO2/RS experience to the Western European theatre, pitting the US forces against the German Wehrmacht. It also introduces a whole new faction, the British, bringing the 'Tommies' to the RO2 experience. The mod has been developed with support from the developers, Tripwire Interactive. It includes 12 new maps, 10 new character sets 3 new vehicles and 11 new weapons.

Heroes of the West on Steam features 6 maps:

  • Omaha Beach - The US 29th Infantry Division storm the bloody beaches of Normandy during the 'Longest Day', June 6th 1944, battling against well dug-in Wehrmacht troops of the 352. Infanterie-Division.
  • Carentan - Immediately after the invasion of mainland Europe on D-Day, units of the US 101st Airborne division fought to capture the key town of Carentan from the Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 6. This was the first encounter between US airborne troops and their German counterparts in the Western Front theater.
  • Port Brest - During the brutal fighting for the key port of Brest from 7 Aug to 19 Sept 1944, the 2 Fallschirmjäger-Division defend against the US 2d Ranger Battalion. This was an encounter between the best troops of both sides and involved bitter street to street battles.
  • Oosterbeek - Operation Market Garden was a bold attempt to get allied troops across the Rhine and into Germany before the end of 1944. In this map, troops of the British 1st Airborne defend the town of Oosterbeek against a mixed bag of German troops pushing into the key Rhine crossing at Arnhem, attempting to seize it back from the lightly armed British before the arrival of relieving mechanised ground forces.
  • Caen Outskirts - Caen was one of the largest Cities in Normandy and saw heavy fighting between the British 2nd Army and Panzergruppe West of the German forces. Attacks and counter attacks came from both sides. The Area around Caen was largely open in contrast with the bocages of the rest of Normandy. Which lead to rapid advances from both sides with battles happening over the smallest of landmarks.
  • Hill 400 - Hill 400 was a target of the 2nd Rangers Battalion. The 2nd Rangers had largely been forgotten by American High command and still had their D-Day issued uniforms and equipment. The hill was defended by the 980th Grenadier Regiment of the 272nd Volksgrenadier Division. The men in this Regiment had decent training and combat experience already unlike other volksgrenadiers. They were also well equipped like other Volksgrenadier divisions. This combo of experience and equipment meant the elite rangers faced a tough defender. December 7th 1944, 3 years after the US declaration of war the 2nd rangers attacked the hill.
  • Bocage - The Americans when they moved further inland were met with tall hedgerows which bordered roads and split the fields. This was a dream for the German defenders as it meant they could defend chokepoints with very few men and halt entire American battalions with just a single German platoon. This is where the Americans lost many tanks to hidden anti tank guns, self propelled guns and enemy heavy tanks hiding in every corner. The hedgerow defences could backfire on the Germans however if the Americans found a way through and around. Outflanking the defenders. Bocage is based on aerial images of Normandy to fully capture the intense fighting.
  • Saint Come du Mont - This is the last stop before carentan. A French farming village defended by elements of the Fallshirmjager and Luftwaffe flak units. 4km Northwest of Carentan. The 101st airborne had organised a large enough force to take this town and were backed up by ground recon elements from Utah beach. It was their first taste of urban combat. The defenders had large amounts of automatic weaponry perfect for this sort of fight but were outnumbered and completely unsupported. They fought a rear guard action all the way back to care tan inflicting heavy losses on the Americans and suffering many themselves.
  • Foy - The Germans completely exhausted themselves during the Ardennes offensive. The American defenders now freshly equipped and backed up by reinforcements started a push back towards Germany. The town of Foy had changed hands several times prior. This is the americans last push. Foy was a staging area for heavy armour. But most of the german tanks there were unusable. If they managed to get their engines running most of them pulled back out of the town. The German defenders were heavily dug in. But a lack of support and men meant that they could only delay the advance.
  • Elsenborn Ridge - The Germans also tried pushing North of Bastogne at the same time as their other advances during Operation Watch on the Rhine. Defended by completely new American formations. However this was the only place on the line where the Americans held the line. Completely outflanked on their south they held out against everything the Germans had to throw at them. Both sides suffering heavy losses and complete breakdowns in communication. It was the men on the ground that made the difference.
  • Hells Corners - American Airborne forces landed in farmland flooded by the German defenders to make crossing the terrain difficult. This is one of the locations where the flow of water is controlled, The Barquette Locks. Control of the locks mean the allies can start draining the fields. The flooded fields caused many paratroopers to drown as they landed. Which was blamed on a badly designed parachute harness. The Americans then copied the British harness which had a quick release system that could be easily operated underwater in the dark. Unlike the American one.
  • Reichswald - This is the very northern tip of the Siegfried line. British forces advance on a heavy German bunker position. While the outnumbered German forces desperately try and hold on. If the Germans fail the British have a clear path into the German mainland. Defended by the last of the German reserves they stood little chance against the extremely well trained and battle hardened British forces.

New Maps

Reichswald - 9th of Feburary 1945.

This is the very northern tip of the Siegfried line. British forces advance on a heavy German bunker position. While the outnumbered German forces desperately try and hold on. If the Germans fail the British have a clear path into the German mainland.

Hell's Corners - 6th June 1944.

American Airborne forces landed in farmland flooded by the German defenders to make crossing the terrain difficult. This is one of the locations where the flow of water is controlled, The Barquette Locks. Control of the locks mean the allies can start draining the fields.

Airdrop supplies.

On both Hell's Corners and Oosterbeek, Allied commanders can now request a supply drop from a C-47. Using the same markers as artillery these supply drops will contain weapons for players to pick up and use. As well as becoming an ammo resupply point on the map. They are faction specific weapons and generally contain a lot of automatic weaponry.
