Thanks to Helge129 for pointing out the shields in the Halo Reach trailer "Remember Reach." I figured out a nice and easy way to do hugging bubble shields that are very close to the trailer I think.
Also, shield hit effects. Was inspired to do them based on the only interpretation I could find:

Awesome, but how you find a way to do this ?
I tried months ago to create something like this but the shields were always on...
The shields are always on right now, the actual shield effect doesn't show up until after the ship is dead.
I think he meant the shield being shown where it was hit and only showing up when it was hit
