Halfquake Amen is part 2 of our Halfquake series.
(The first part of Halfquake appeared in 2002 June's issue of PC Gamer)

We have been working on HQA for more than one year and it has been released on September 1st 2002.

Here are a few features:

- Complete new textures and sounds
- Absolutely confusing design
- Soundtrack with more than 30 minutes of playtime
- Twelve parts of pure sadism
- About six colors (black, gray, green, white, yellow (alienblood), red (mostly your blood))
- And of course: No HEV Suit

We've got some screenshots too:

Finally, after roughly three years of development, the third part of the Halfquake series is available for download (Mirror #2, Mirror #3)! Here is a list of frequently asked questions.

What is it about?

As in the previous two parts, you once again play the role of a victim, thrown into a strange and deadly environment to suffer and die - for the entertainment of whoever is watching!

What is required to play?

Halfquake Sunrise is a Half-Life 1 modification and works with both the old WON Half-Life and the Steam version of it. Thus, you don't need a high-end PC.

How long is it?

It takes about four to five hours from beginning to end, depending on your skill.

Is it free?

Yes, both the modification and the soundtrack (Soundtrack Mirror #2, Soundtrack Mirror #3) are available for no cost at all.

Is it single-player only?

Yes!

Is there a walkthrough available?

No, but you can help unlock traps for hints or join the forums if you require aid in your progress.

Can I watch the trailer again?

Have a nice death!

You: "Another boring modification for half-life?" We: "Well, we and our testers don't agree on that one... It's neither boring nor interesting, it's FRUSTRATING...

Tried The Present...It has the same repetition based, mindless puzzles of Amen that have insta death, only here there is a tiny bit more variety in the types of punishment you recieve, falling back down to a part you just passed like in the first and second puzzle thus it still in effect wastes your time but is somehow less annoying than dying... or taking falling damage by spending to much time on those air lifting things, and then theres a type of puzzle that does the normal type of punishment real puzzles are supposed to have.
This one takes your time as you try and solve it by thinking...
A maze like one which is basically a type of perception/memory based puzzle.
If your bad at it you merely have to keep pressing your body against the side of the walls until you find a way through.

Then theres a bunch of the same random stuff we got before, like a random scream in your ear... -_- yeah these guys don't know horror so they might as well not bother trying that, which thankfully they dropped in the sequel Half-Quake Sunrise.

Theres the same niggling issue I have with the voice over of a few guys that basically sound like a bunch of modders talking random poop to the audience, which seems to go contrary to any atmosphere the music is trying to build. The abstract nature of the mods graphics, like Amen, may have been to cause eerieness but unfortunately starting at blackness for to long doesn't do much except bore you.
It would be way better if they added some actual hand drawn art to the walls, pencil sketches. So instead gone for a more surreal storybased mod rather than the bland experience we're left with.

In other words The Present is 2 tiny steps forward with one good puzzle that requires you to think (maze), alternate forms of punishment, but aside from that, like Amen just alot shorter... & has less music.

If you want something mentally stimulating I would skip these half-quakes and go straight to the newer one: Half-Quake Sunrise.
