Q. What is Gundam Universe?

Gundam Universe is a total conversion (which is a MOD) for Quake III Arena. MODs are additions to Quake III which require you to have Quake III installed. Gundam Universe is a mod based around the popular and epic Japanese animation franchise that is Gundam. We shall be bringing an array of Mobile Suits from the various Gundam series and movies into the fast paced action of Quake III. We hope to provide players with the weapons, the suits and the feel of piloting these fantastic machines through a variety of multiplayer game modes set in a wide selection of maps based in the Gundam stories.

Q. Will Gundam Universe be single player?

We do intend to try and maintain bot support in the MOD as we go so that players can practice offline with AI opponents. However Gundam Universe is meant primarily as a multiplayer game for online or LAN play. There will not be any campaign or mission based single player modes, merely simulated multiplayer as you get in normal Quake III.

Q. Will individual Mobile Suits have more of an advantage over others?

In specific aspects, yes. Certain types of Mobile Suits will have an advantage over other types of Mobile Suits (e.g. strength, speed, defence, etc.) The Suits will accurate to the show, though Mobile Suits from different timelines can't be compared accurately to Mobile Suits from other timelines. For example; saying Sandrock (Gundam Wing) is more agile than RX-78GP01 (0083:Stardust Memory), or Wing Zero Kai (Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz) is faster than the Airmaster (Gundam X). We are working hard to keep the abilities of suits as close to the show as possible. However we do have to think of playability and we will be working up until the last minute to balance the suits well enough to make the game as enjoyable as we can.

Q. How will the balancing work in Gundam Universe?

Every Universal Century (UC) Mobile Suit will be true to the series with its basic weaponry (non-basic weaponry would be the wings of light, satellite cannons - basically things we've hinted are going to be specials). UC Suits will also be true to the series when it comes to armour and speed as well. Now Alternate Universe Suits have to be brought into UC physics and rules which results in some obvious changes (no longer will they be invincible machines of death to put it simply). It also means more of their weapons (as there tend to be more ridiculously destructive weapons like satellite cannons in Alternate Universe shows) will be lowered in ability.

What does this really affect then? Not much. It means the nuke will not be of nuke power (the maps are not big enough to enable the GP02a to be far enough away to survive), though it will be strong enough to destroy multiple Mobile Suits. AU weaponry and devices like satellite cannons and buster rifles will be very devastating but obviously not able to engulf the whole map in one shot

As well as that simple form of moving suits' abilities into UC there is also extra balancing to be applied to Suits. Now our main goal is to make the game fun and playable. This means that during playtesting some minor details or abilities of Suits may have to be slightly reduced to make the game at least marginally playable with other suits. However it is important that you understand that when we say balancing in relation to Suit abilities we are not talking major differences. We are talking (for the most part) minor tweaking in order to make the game better to play.

Well... This is the news that you guys have been waiting for... Its certainly the day that I have been dreaming for ever since I was just a young teen envisioning about the creation and development of a Gundam Total Conversion for Quake III Arena spanning the entire Gundam Universe.

Its been a wild ride but let's get this party started, shall we?!

For over 7 years, Gundam Universe has been in production. And today is the day that it is finally released. After several announcements of its release within the past few months, its finally happened. I hope you guys will enjoy something that myself and the team have worked our hearts and souls out on just for you.

The features list for Release 1.0 is quite extensive and must say is drool worthy so get ready to buckkle your seatbelts because the list is pretty long:

- Fully customized in-game and main menu systems.

- Unique music created exclusively by Sindustry our Music engineer and sounds either ripped from the serieses themselves or created from our Sound Engineers, airon16 and Sup.

- Unique media (models, maps, graphics, textures, etc.) created from our Modellers, texture designers and Level Designers. Boost and dust graphics, etc. There are too many to list so you'll just have to discover all of the beautiful detail after playing it extensively! =)

- The playable Mobile Suits presented in the 1st release are as follows (each with its own unique stats in terms of energy consumption rate, energy value, armour (health), boost speed and weapons):

-RX-78-2 Gundam (Default model)
-NT-1 Alex
-MS07 B Gouf
-Gelgoog Marine Commander Type
-Gundam Double X
-EZ-8
-Hyaku Shiki
-Sandrock Custom
-GP-01 FB
-Zaku II
-Super Gundam

- Very extensive code with specific elements (In detail below):

- Fully integrated Boost system that mimics how it is from the anime serieses. Hold space bar and hold a direction down in order to boost in that direction. Hold space bar down while in mid-air and you can even hover in order to track down a target. Hold space bar and the boost jump button at the same time in order to go straight up.

- Beam sabre system that isn't fully complete but has a unique target lockon system that makes it easy and fun to fight with melee based weapons (specifically the beam sabre). Press r to toggle on and off the lock-on system on a desired target while having your melee weapon out in order to lock on. You Must be in a certain range and stay within this specified range in order keep the lock-on system active.

- Unique stats and weapons for each suit based on their armour (health), energy level, energy consumption rate, boost speed, and suit specific weapons. Not all weapons were included for each suit though, as many overlapped each other (For example, the beam sabre was kept for the RX-78 but not its Hyper Hammer). The suits' statistics can be compared with each other within the Mobile Suit Select Screen (excluding the Special Move rating, which is not relevant for this release).

- Radar system that tracks both enemy and ally targets.

- Fully integrated HUD systems with different designs. There are 2 variations of the first person HUD cockpit view depending on the suit selected. The 3rd person HUD is the same for every suit.

- Shield blocking system that reduces damage upon oncoming projectiles. Press and hold w in order to raise your shield and reduce the damage taken from projectiles. Remember only utilize this as a last resort... In other words, only use this tactic if your legs are blown off and you have run out of energy, as you will still take quite a bit of damage even after raising your suit's shield if it has one.

- Fully functional locational damage system that can be utilized strategically while in a battle. Target your enemy's legs in order to immobolize your target from walking (and he/she must boost and use up energy in order to move), target the enemy's head to blow it off and blur your target's vision or simply target your enemy's torso in order to destroy him/her! When sparks start to fly out from your enemy's torso, you'll know that his/her Mobile suit is just about to be destroyed so go in for the kill!

- Spark and electrical effects when you are heavily damaged or dead.

- Vulcan system for each suit to knock back your target whilst in a battle. Press and hold e in order to utilize your vulcans.

- Specific Game modes:

Death Match - Standard Quake III Mode

Team Death Match - Standard Quake III Mode

Capture the Flag - Standard Quake III Mode

Tournament - Standard Quake III Mode

Last Mech Standing - This mode is played in a free for all, every mecha for itself situation. The last player left alive wins that round and then all the players enter the game once more and start again. The victor is usually the player who won the most rounds in a set timelimit.

Last Team Standing/Team Last Mech Standing - A team based version of the mode above, with the team to utterly destroy the other winning the round.

Massacre - This game mode is a deathmatch variation geared towards representing the battles that typify the Gundam animes. One side is composed of players in Gundam Mobile Suits, the other populated by players in mass produced Suits such as the Leo or the Zaku. The mass produced team will be restricted by the game to have at least double the number of players present compared to those on the Gundam team. Normal deathmatch then ensues.

In order to play these game modes since they cannot be seen in the Join server and Start server menu pages, type: /g_gametype # in your console BEFORE you start a new server, which you MUST do in the console as well with the following command: /map gu_mapname

joingametypes {
{ "Free For All" 0 }
{ "Tournament" 1 }
{ "Last Mech Standing" 3 }
{ "Team Deathmatch" 4 }
{ "Massacre" 5 }
{ "Last Team Standing" 6 }
{ "Capture the Flag" 9 }

You guys should upload this mod to this site too.
It would be easier to find the download link rather than use your own website :/

Xencer - Read the buglist report on the boards first before playing. That pretty much goes for anyone.

The memory allocation errors have plagued us for a long time and we couldn't resolve it in time for the release and we are still searching for answers in regards to that.

However aside from the memory errors, play GU with another player and you'll find that its loads of fun... Played it today with a few fans and we had a total blast.

jnfviet - Have you tried using the beam sabre with the lock-on system? (By toggling r?). That adds another element to the game play.

No offense, I really love Gundam games,
but never got into the anime.
I couldn't get it to work online so I tried
it with bots, and all I could use was a gun that didn't
hurt anyone and 2 tentacle looking sabers, that didn't seem
to have much effect...
The memory error didn't really effect me.
You should have a toggle button and then be able to fly freely
in the air, using space to go up and crouch to go down, such as ESF.

The boost system is true to the Gundam anime... ESF is based on DBZ and thus organic characters. a Gundam's verniers cannot propel them straight downwards, thus we didn't put in that option.

For online play, look on the shoutbox for IPs made by Broken and you can join his server. We usually have 5-6 way DM or Last Mech Standing Matches going or even CTF or Last Team Standing games. It should work if you join that.

For the Beam sabre, press r on a target and time your slashes right with the sabre. If you do, you'll find that you'll destroy your opponent very quickly with the sabre...

Same with the beam rifle and bazooka. You can destroy your opponent in 2-3 hits with either weapon. Target the torso, not the legs, head or arms. There is a locational damage system in the game. If you destroy your opponent's head, you'll cause his/her vision to blur. If you destroy one of your opponents legs, then you'll immobilize your opponent. If you destroy your target's torso, then you kill your target. Its all about strategy in GU...

Play with other players and you'll see how much it is. Look for IPs on the shoutbox on the official GU forums at the bottom of the Forums.
