'Xterrier is truly the best thing to ever happen to mankind. Never before have we worked together as a single people. Never before have we had complete peace and no wars. Xterrier, a corporate entity, has achieved what the nations of Earth never could and has given us the chance to achieve great things.'
- George Nativus, Xterrier Mansions

Dissolution is a science fiction, single-player mod for Half-Life 2 that mixes adventure and action game-play. Set in the year 2089, in a universe dominated by a mega corporate entity, Xterrier, the player awakes in a hidden lab to the voice of the mysterious Wilson. Guided by Wilson, the player must make their way through the ravaged Xterrier 581c colony, making use of any and all resources they can get their hands on in order to survive, all the while attempting to piece together the events leading to the colony's collapse and their own identity.

Features:

PDA Audio Logs — Get a glimpse of the story and the people who lived at Xterrier 581c by listening to the recorded audio logs.

Complex plot — Dissolution features a layered plot told through PDA audio logs, characters and the environment itself.

Survival game-play — You will have to scavenge and conserve to survive. Ammo is sparse and your supply limited. You will need to make every shot count and collect every ammo box you can in order to survive Xterrier 581c.

Exploration —The more you explore, the better your chances. Dissolution provides an expansive and unique world for the player to explore and rewards explorers with additional supplies, health and audio logs.

Atmospheric soundtrack — Dissolutions features a dark but intriguing soundtrack that compliments in-game events and atmosphere.Dissolution

After about two years of intense, and often difficult, development, Dissolution is finally available for public release.

Often it has been difficult, but many more times it has been rewarding and it is great to finally be releasing this mod. Of course, this mod wouldn’t be what it is now without the help from my music composers and voice actors, all of whom have been excellent to work with. I thank them all for helping me with this project.

For those wondering what Dissolution is: Dissolution is a science-fiction, single-player mod that places great focus on fun gameplay, strong plot, interesting environments and dramatic characters. Dissolution encourages players to piece together its plot and does this through character interaction, audio logs (giving you various points of view) and environmental story-telling.

I hope you enjoy Dissolution and, regardless of whether or not you do, I welcome your feedback.

Not bad! Definitely fun to play, but over time, the pistol and fire axe seemed to be worthless. As swarms of enemies come towards you, your most recently acquired weapon was the only one of worth. I was perfectly fine with graphics, but animation was lacking. The fire axe should have a quicker swing, and the pistol should have more kick to it. Whoever voiced the scientist was great, however some voices were soft and not very well played. Now, I bet that I could not do anything compared to this, but there are some problems that could be fixed. A sequel would be nice, as long as it addresses these problems and takes care of them in a good manner.

Thanks for playing and leaving feedback, all of the points raised I'd pretty much agree with. I had intended to a sequel, and I have started work on one, but a lack of time has it currently on hold. :)

Thanks for playing and commenting! The crows should be visible, but they are very small and blend into the environment quite well.

Part 3

Despite all of my criticism, I didn't hate the game, and it is obvious that you put a lot of effort into it, but it just felt like it could have been a lot better if it wasn't so "inspired" by Bioshock, and if the gameplay was improved. Hopefully all of those problems will be fixed in the sequel, since the universe of this game seems pretty interesting and quite original. Yeah but still, it is an interesting mod, and is nowhere near the worst out there. It's worth a download, but (in my opinion) not worth a second playthrough.

*mild spoilers ahead*

Thanks for taking the time to leave such an in-depth review. All of your points are fair and I agree with a good few of them. One thing I might say is that you continue to follow Wilson largely because there is nobody better to trust. Wilson isn't so much evil, rather he is just completely indifferent to human suffering.

If and when I get the time to do a sequel, I hope to address a lot of the issues from this mod.

Thanks for playing!

Part 2
Now for the story. Personally I liked it, but like I said, pretty much all the main parts are taken from Bioshock. Also the characters are not nearly as interesting, and I knew that [SPOILER] Wilson was evil [END SPOILER] when I listened to the audio recordings in his room. Also, why are you not able to [More SPOILERS] stop obeying his orders, even after Woodrow Bell tells you his intentions. In fact, the whole scene there was pretty lame. I liked the reveal, but they never explained why you were held to the spot, or why you couldn't kill Woodrow Bell (I mean, that guy killed his son in cold blood, and is partially the cause of this whole thing) and why you had to keep following Wilson, even though you knew he really doesn't have the best intents in mind.[Less SPOILERS] In addition, the audio quality was awful. I mean, the voices are so quite, I had to turn up my sound to hear it, but I still had to stand still, since any background noise would make the voices inaudible. The voice acting wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good. It was certainly better than quite a few mods out there, but it still isn't amazing. Finally, I remember you saying in a reply to anther review that you were teasing your sequel, but it really added nothing to the story, even though I thought it would (and it would give the story a change from Bioshock). One thing I liked was the music, it had an eerie feel and added to the atmosphere of the game. Speaking of atmosphere, it sort of died down as you went on through the game. For example, the crow level, where you see the creepy shadows and stuff, was one of the most atmospheric scenes in any mod, but you never see any of that again, and all your enemies for the rest of the game can be killed in a few seconds. So by the end of the game the atmosphere had become incredibly dull, and I didn't really get scared or creeped out at any point after the crow level.

Part 1 of my review

I have very mixed feelings about this mod. I can't really dislike it because the story is interesting and in some parts very clever, but I can't really like it because pretty much all the main parts of the story (including the twist and the whole "Crazy Artist") parts are taken from Bioshock, the graphics look like something from the year 2000, and the gameplay is incredibly lacklustre.

The thing is, the gameplay and graphics are generally bad. The textures are bland, the animations are jumpy and don't look very good, most of the models look blocky and aren't very well made, and there are only like 3 different physics objects in the whole game. As for the gameplay, the levels are all basically the same, and "exploring" is basically just going the wrong way, hitting a dead end, listening to the recording, and then going back. I saw no "survival gameplay" since I usually had a lot of ammo, and never really felt the need to conserve it. In fact, I don't think I ever had more than 1 weapon without ammo, and even when I did the ammo was usually restored within a few minutes. The enemy AI is not very good, but they did seem like they were being controlled by a hive mind of sorts. However, I never really found them to be much of a challenge since you can usually take down a group with 6 shotgun shots, and they don't get the chance to do too much damage (I was playing on normal). The crows on the other hand are interesting, but stop being scary after the first and start getting annoying after the second (I'm glad you didn't put too many of them in the game).

I have never played it, I'm afraid. The idea of having killer birds came partially from The Birds (the old film). ;)

Highest Rated (6 agree) 9/10

The architecture hearkens back to the days of the original Quake. However, this is offset by including a great deal of dynamic lighting, awesome sound and music, and some tough action sequences. The whole thing feels inspired by Bioshock or (to a lesser degree) Dead Space. I truly enjoyed the horror elements and the unique new enemy to fight (not spoiled here). I think the horror elements could have been greatly expanded upon; if only the mapping had been more unique and expansive, the mod team…

I think the most kind thing I can say for this mod is that it didn't drag on for very long. And that it was relatively inoffensive; it didn't make me sit through ten hours of Combine Soldiers and poorly scripted sequences, and that for all intents and purposes it seemed professionally designed. In short, I see this as a wasted two years only to produce a Bioshock clone which fails in every respect where Bioshock succeeded. It makes the same attempt at an idealistic society that we saw in Bioshock…
