Chernobyl Chronicles

The Plot

The protagonist, Klim, is an experienced stalker who has spent 3 years in the Zone and has been earning money by hunting and selling artefacts. He doesn't enjoy performing tasks, even well-paid ones, understanding that it's not always worth risking your own life for someone and that employers in the Zone are not always fair. Klim has good reputations among the stalkers.

However, the protagonist has his own goal in the Zone. Before the catastrophe Klim used to live in a small town named Chernobyl-1 (Pripyat's outskirts). A few days before the catastrophe some information about the tragedy which was bound to happen soon had suddenly spread. What's more, another catastrophe, yet to strike in about 20 years, was also mentioned. Having recieved such information in a suspicious letter, Klim decided to leave the town with his family straightaway.

The predicted catastrophe striked in a few days...In 20 years the second one would strike. Klim decides to return to Chernobyl-1 in order to find his flat and the letter, wanting to find out more about the thing that had such an incluence on people's lives. All in all, the novice stalker Klim had to spend 3 years in the Zone before finally getting closer to his target...

List of additions

• Thoroughly written plot lines which allow the player to get deeper into the game atmosphere.
• Particular approach to game dialogs. A lot of dialogs open up their narrator's story and personality. Well-worked texts not only make you simply complete each task and quest, but also keep in touch with what's going on in progress.
• 3 maps: Chernobyl-1 (LA), Pripyat (CoP), Chernobyl-4 (CNPP).
• Qualitative spawn, a number of dungeons, full simulation, new AI-schemes (artefacts hunting/picking + animations and trading + animations), CoP-style stalker camps and anomaly zones.
• Balanced gameplay.
• A capability to customize a few gameplay features for youself.
• Characters' voices for some quest moments.
• Special artefacts transmutation system.
• Regular and engine 1st person cutscenes, GUI-features.
• SWTC weather with a few additions to wether cycle's.
• The list is not 100% full and you may witness other mod additions in gaming process.

DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID
On the mission where you find the notes in the old building and give them back to the monolith leader after meeting your friend from the first map, DONT JUMP OUT OF THE WINDOW TO AVOID ANOMALIES AS A SHORTCUT! Go back out the main door and run into Puck. Otherwise the mission will glitch and you cant talk to the leader until you talk to puck.

How do i allow for traders to buy damaged weapons in this mod? I know how to do it for the base game but that method doesnt seem to work for the mod. Anyone know?

Okay...after plowing through this mod for the second time, i decided to write a review for this piece of work.

*Deeeeeeeeeeeep breaaaaaaaaath*

First of all, if i could describe this mod with one sentence, it will be "Short and sweet with a touch of sour." I will break this review into three aspects "Gameplay" "Zone" and "Plot"

Gameplay: Okay, so this part is mostly intact, anomalies bury you with a slightest touch (except for whirligig, which is actually much more sparing than the original game), you find and sell artifacts, shoot people, bla bla bla. The first noticeable (and largest) change is that the mod allows you to kill small groups (mostly trios) of loners without making the whole faction your enemy. Another change is the weapon pricing. Stepanych (the mod's own Sidorovich/Barkeep lovechild) will chug out a hefty price for high tier guns (that use Nato ammunition and higher, but don't let those Ak's on field, they are good too). Just kill some mercs, grab and fix their guns and sell them, you will not only replenish the repair bill. This is a good feature, as it can make one feel that they are not holding a cheap, Chinese plastic piece of garbage that is not worth a penny. The enemies also suffered some (unfortunate) changes. If i could describe this in one nonexistent word, it would be "Over-buffed." Really, bloodsuckers, snorks, chimeras (which are quite common) and other higher tier mutants can kill you IN ONE blow, no matter the fact that you have the strongest armor of the mod, upgraded to its maximum potential, this means that meeting with these guys is a torture, as you'll have to restart the same files over and over again.

The Zone: Devs did an inhumanly good job adding the villages of Chernobyl-1 and 4, on completely unique and originally designed maps and buildings (the only familiar craft was that tower in the bloodsucker village) . lush green hills and trees, covering the abandoned village, as it is overlooked by a stalker base. What the maps actually nail better than the original is the random anomaly placement. According to cannon, the Zone is dangerous because of vast types of anomalies scattered across it. You can't walk 10 meters without stumbling on a solitary anomaly ready to shove your face up your own anus. They are everywhere and without a careful eye, you will die...a lot. Yes, anomaly clusters are still a thing, it just breaks my heart that they are the only source of artifacts (It would have been awesome had the solitary ones dropped them too). There are many new Artifacts and special zones to construct those new artifacts. Also Prypiat comes back, with a tad more quests and playtime, unlike the original.

The plot: It is about a bloke named Klim, an ex-resident of the aforementioned C-1 village, who returns to the zone to figure out a mystery of a group of people who asked his fellow villagers to evacuate the area days before the first accident. The story is very rich and detailed with large sums of texts to read, characters are diverse, interesting, sometimes funny and relatable, along with occasional voice acting that is actually quite decent. Too bad that the texts that pop up as subtitles (on English version) are quite small and don't deliver the exact saying of the voice actors (not a problem for me, as i know Russian, but sometimes the subtitles miss out some very crucial plot details). The quests themselves are somewhat straightforward, some devolving into fetch-quests without any marker (some are quite confusing with their description, might take you a lot of time, if you even find the approximate location). Despite it being story-rich, i can only come up with handful of scripted conflicts where i fought human enemies (5 to be honest, mostly with mercenaries, total skirmishes on a large scale were from 8-10) and these fights were mostly too short, which is a shame for a game that lets you gear up this easily. The story by itself is somewhat between 5-6 hours long. If you don't regularly go to harvest artifacts, do side quests and generally loot random stashes, it may be even shorter. As a last thing, i disliked the ending, not to spoil anything but it was confusing as all hell and anticlimactic (loved the last mission's special feature though).

In conclusion, apart from a mix of frequent anomalies, unfairly strong mutants and all the loading caused from them, the game is fluid, optimized and runs well (the only crash i encountered was fixed shortly after), plays well and feels well. I just hope the devs can make a sequel (as the ending texts to leave some promises) or write a small novel to expand or at least shine more light on this story (or they can call me to do that) So i give this mod a 9/10. There is an old saying at my place "Everyone has flaws, but your good sides must be strong enough and large in numbers so that they can overweight and outnumber these flaws". Same is with this game, it is too fun to let some poor design choices and limitations ruin it, as it feels like an expansion pack.

If you like it, be sure to vote up for it to be seen and helpful for others.
Thank you for sticking with me this far.

After all this time (3 months) i finally downloaded the 7th chapter's crash fix and finished the game. I have to say, CC was something unique and surprisingly had some "stalker realism" elements (absolutely random placement of anomalies) that the original lacks, along with blind fetch-quests that frustrates the hell out of me. The story is quite interesting, but the ending is quite underwhelming, along with a strange ending cut-scene. The only thing i wonder is whether or not the chernobyl chronicles have multiple endings, oh and if the devs are planning to make a short novel of it, to clear somethings up.

Put together really well. The story is tight and well paced. Has a very good English translation published by the Russian mod team - a rarity and much appreciated.
