The Black Mesa Research facility is built on top of an old 50's-Red-Scare Nuclear Defense Base, part of the black mesa office complex is just repurposed military complex

I see his point. especially the crates in the less populated areas, like the giant resevoir of stagnant water that you fall into after the train crash. Those crates should look rotted and mildew-ey, like they've been sitting there for ten years too many.
