I'll say it this way: I can live (of course) with the new size ... but when you consider that in the ABC-Armor of the Desolator life-support systems are integrated, I wonder ... where have they the space in this size?
And of course, Tesla Troopers are built wider than Desolator because they require a much stronger exo-skeleton to wear the miniatur Tesla generator,the Tesla Discharge Devices AND the EM Disruptor.
And also Tesla Troopers have a on-board targeting computers in the armor.
I think that explains a little the . .. the corpulent outer of the unit.(Sorry, I'm a freak and i love it) ^^

Only stressing me again is that the Desolator 's are a head smaller than Tesla Troopers.
e.g.: if you use one big ,Soviet'-faction with all special-units (Desolator, terrorist, demo truck, tesla tank) , or make it like in red alert 2: russia, libya, iraq, cuba.
How will you do that actually with the political groups? So germany, france Britain, USA ...? Or do you make a large fraction with all special units?
To your 2. point:
only 3 units can crush walls:
Allied Assault Destroyer, Soviet Apocalypse-Tanks and King Onis with the ,Bull Rush'-Ability. The other units have to shoot a hole in the wall.
