After the decline of NATO and USA, Europe finally got what it has awaited since WW1 - Independence. Originally, it was expected that the Eastern lands will join the Union shortly after its formation. However the reunited Germany, now the mightiest nation of the European continent expressed claims on the former socialist Poland western lands which were granted by USSR. The dispute led to short, but deadly joint-European assault on the Third Polish republic. Simultaneously, a united Army of France, Germany, Britain and Italy secured the disintegration of Yugoslavia with means of armor and aircraft.
The full defeat of Poland and occupation of the whole Yugoslavia was prevented only when the nuclear-armed Ukraine and Belarus were threatening to enter the war.
Thus gave rise to the formation of the European Union - the economical, military and political union of the Western nations, binded by interests and nationalist ideology and led by Germany.
EU inherited the best after former US and Japan technological base, but also - problems with immigrants and grave shortage of resources which is increasing every day. The task of Drang nach Osten is no more a question of ambitions, it's a question of survival.

1) btw, if you started this, I mention that the original idea of the mod (January 2010) was about making a mod about Slovenia spec-ops acting in Caucasian Imamate.
