Nice concept, I'll follow this one with interest. It's good to see the DoomIII engine being used in mods.

Very nice idea for a mod. I've added it to my tracking list.

I can see comparisons with BioShock but why not? It was a top game!

Keep up the good work.

Great news that it can be installed along other SMOD games. Thanks, I will be downloading it today.

Sorry ZeekyHBomb if it came across as a dumb question, but I'm relatively new to the "SMOD" world ;)

Looking forward to playing it.

Can this be installed at the same time as other SMOD games? I have SMOD CSS Sci-fi installed at the moment and I don't want to overwrite it.

I'd love to have this new mod installed, it looks really impressive and challenging.

I thought this was quite a difficult poll, I'm actually quite satisfied with the site and the way that it has been developed.

If anything, and it wasn't in the poll, I would like to see some tutorials, even commercial ones like those videos from Neosis, because you can judge the quality of the content before splashing out your hard-earned cash.

Blowing up walls is possible.

I was doing some work on maps for DoD source, where I wanted to place charges against a wall and then blow them apart just like in previous DoD maps such as Caen.

It was quite easy to do and relied on a damage modifier. It was possible to blow the wall apart using a rocket launcher.

I picked up the tips from one of the modding sites so you might want to do a google search ... but the information is out there. Unfortunately my source map is on a dead machine which I don't have time to revive just yet.

Incidentally Red Faction was an awesome game at the time. I hope you get the mod up and running.

Good luck

Interesting article. I think it shows that Mod-Teams should start considering using some of the professional workflow methodologies that you see in other areas of Software Development. The first graph shows the typical waterfall model, the second model is more realistic (Rational or Spiral Model).

I've never been a member of a mod-team, although I'm hoping to get my modelling skills up to scratch by the end of this year so I can join one, and I will certainly be recommending that we follow the advice from this article.

Cheers !

New graphics card ... it is the weakest part of my rig at the moment. It only has to last a year though because I will be upgrading the whole rig at the end of next year ;)

Been a DoD addict since it's earliest years .. even before Steam (so almost prehistoric).

We have lost some really good maps since moving over to source (Caen for example). I'm hoping that I can find the time to start remaking (remapping) some of the classic maps and releasing them as a classic map-pack.

This a really unique mod concept. I checked out the project website (which is really well-made except it is in french so maybe a little difficult for some people to understand). The video on the site gave an extremely brief glimpse of what to expect.

It looks cool .. and the concept and some of the gameplay descriptions also make it sound pretty cool. My only concern (sorry for the downer) is that the gameplay may have been forsaken in striving for the uniqueness, and ultimately it is the gameplay that players want. However, from what I have seen and read so far, the team seem to have it well covered.

Good luck, I am really looking forward to seeing this mod. 80% complete already ... I'll be watching with interest :D

I like a game with more open play (less linear). I like to have some choices in the approach that I take. Sometimes you need stealth, sometimes you need to be Rambo. The opening sections of Far Cry were a good example.

I enjoyed HL2's use of physics to solve problems, although some of the solutions were a little too obvious.

The mod is looking pretty damn sweet. I will be following this with some interest.

I want to get back to modding in DoomIII/Quake4 because I think the engine provides the best real-time lighting. Unfortunately, right now I am tied up with some CoD2 mapping and I have some DoD:S maps to be getting on with. But after the mapping is done .. it's back to DoomIII :D

Followed this link from the other review on Thievery for UnrealT.

I was always disappointed that Thievery never made it onto a more modern engine .. and thanks to JoeX111 for pointing this mod out ... I am really looking forward to playing this. Great work guys :D

Gaspode - - 23 comments @ Should dead mods allow others to use their models / code etc?

I voted yes ... If I worked on a mod that died, I would be happy to let my models be used in another mod as long as I was given some credit for doing so.

However, how I would I feel if the mod was a great success and went commercial, and I then didn't get any share of the booty :( .... but to be fair would I really be entitled?

Gaspode - - 23 comments @ February MOTM: Classic Doom 3

Steering clear of the argument of whether DoomIII was a good game or not, I downloaded this mod awhile back and I had a blast with it. The team have done a great job of bringing "Knee Deep in the Dead" kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

They have used the DoomIII engine wonderfully to create a believeable world albeit full of eye-candy, but what sets the mod apart from DoomIII is that you will be faced by hordes of enemies all on the screen at the same time. And this is difficult ... now you face a number of hellish monsters who have been blessed with a certain degree of AI and it is no longer an easy task to get rid of them.

The levels have been modelled on the original level design and have been reproduced as faithfully (with respect to layout) as possible. There is, of course, a certain amount of artistic licence used within the design .. but if you are familiar with the original game, you will certainly recognise the levels.

If you are old enough to remember the original (like myself), or are just a fan of the franchise, you really *must* play this mod. I cannot recommend it highly enough for the fans.

Gaspode - - 23 comments @ March MOTM: Thievery UT

I remember downloading this mod in an earlier incarnation some time last year. The idea was really appealling as I was a fan of the Thief games.
However, I was disappointed to find that this was only available for UT and does not seem to work with the later versions of the UT games (UT2K3, UT2K4).

I did have a look at the models and meshes and I have to admit that the team had done some amazing work.

Might be worth checking out if you have the original UT. Hopefully they might port it to UT2K3/4 at some point ;)
