On one hand, it's a free FPS.

On the other, it's not exceptionally great. It isn't well balanced, the controls aren't quite perfect, and I'm pretty sure one of the maps is a blatant copy of a Halo 2 map.

Fun, and worth trying out; very good compared to Halo (which seems to be an inspiration) but as a Deathmatch game it really doesn't even remotely compare to the commercial alternatives.

Generally a great game. The single player is rather uninspired; most of it is just Call of Duty in space, though the later parts get better. The multiplayer, as of the most recent patch, is very fun; much the same as Quake III Arena, but that's a good thing. However, it's still very skill-based, with a steep learning curve; I would expect you'd need 50-150 hrs in before you really start consistently winning games (It was about 100 for me). So, if you're the sort of gamer who just wants easy victory, look elsewhere. Quake 4 will make you earn it.

The single-player is generic action movie crap, relying on explosions to keep the audience entertained. I found the gameplay very uninteresting and completely lacking in innovation, and the plot is barely existent; it's just some barely intelligible, hardly explained gibberish.

The multiplayer is very unbalanced. It's got a heavy layer of RPG mechanics and item unlocks that tries to distract you from the fact that the actual gameplay isn't fun to play; "maybe it'll be fun once I unlock the next weapon/perk". (To be fair, I stopped playing it after a little more than 5 hours of play, so maybe it's actually true. Either way, it's not worth grinding through 5+ hours of being free XP for the high-level players.)

You could do a lot better than playing Call of Duty 4.
