The issue is more about how ******** the drops are (or the overall artificial difficulty stuff, often complained about since Misery 2 came out) - completly takes you out of the immersion when the reward for winning a gun fight is... nothing, an AK with 5% condition and maybe something extra. (which usually is the main loot in vanilla misery)
The config files are in this location: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat\gamedata\configs\misc
I'd suggest using a tool like notepad++ or any other notpad that isn't the basic windows one. You are mostly interested in death_loot_settings.ltx file. Other death-files also have some importance.
We used to have "les miserables" submod that kinda de-autismified the difficulty settings but I think it wasn't updated for 2.2, you can try to download it and look at what they've changed and try to apply the changes yourself. You'll have to adjust drop rates of items and their survivability, especially gun condition factors which are just set to "**** you, the gun will never be in decent condition even though the guy you killed would hose you down with infinite bullets". Buff the minimal values for the guns and set the max value way higher - you'll still have the guns at medium quality mostly but some will be fixable by cleaning and thus profitable to sell to Owl.
If you are considering restarting you might also grab the TAZ 2.0 (The armed zone) for the newest misery - it kinda buffs handguns to a usable degree (though some are still underpowered-you can always attempt to fix it yourself through config/weapons)
