A prototype asteroid from the new asteroid generator, sans textures. You can see the general lumpiness as well as two (internally connecting) caves

Now THAT is an asteroid! Will mining be block by block?

Actually, THAT is not as big, accurate, or full-featured an asteroid as I want to make :D It needs to be able to scale to 10x that diameter (It's currently 150 meters wide, I want to be able to simulate up to 1.5km objects), it needs differentiation of layers and materials like real asteroids, and it needs additional surface features (Mainly craters)

Each block of the asteroid will be mainly composed of asteroid rock - Chondite etc. - and have little commercial value. However, many will also contain ore of varying values- Olivine, Pyroxene, iron, nickel, water. Combine enough ores with a smelter and you'll get a solid block of the material.

Additionally, mining asteroids will be tricky - You can't just bore a hole straight into it like in other block-games. You have to detach the block you want (or want rid of) with the left mouse, then either drag it around and throw it away behind you using the right mouse OR mark it for collection with the middle mouse. Blocks marked for collection will be scooped up by your crew within a few seconds and held in your ship's hold, however you've defined that.

Cheers,
-Dirk
