Sandpit is a sandbox mod for Half-Life.

Features include:

  • Pose menu for changing skins, bodies, world and mouth position position of monsters, models and sprites

10 years ago the first version of Sandpit was released - it wasn't much - just the spawn menu and a few monsters from Half-Life, all based off some VGUI tutorials by Richard Zad at The Wavelength. For the next few years Sandpit got lots of updates with lots of features but by 2010 other projects (like Sandbot) had started to take up more time.

In 2013 full-time work rolled around and not a lot of programming got done for fun anymore, but the updates to Half-Life and the release of the updated SDK re-ignited some interest and Sandpit started getting some more attention again. In the background, work on Basis got moved to new Half-Life SDK.

In 2015 a new job meant more desire to finally get Sandpit v4 to happen. Until then nothing had really been done beyond patching a code-base that was very obviously messy and in need of some love. Basis was tidied up and released publicly in 2015 and in 2016 and a new Sandpit was forked off Basis to take advantage of the fixes and structure that it brought. Work continued slowly for the next little while, but by the second half of 2018 it was still far from completion. The looming 10 year anniversary of Sandpit meant a lot of work got done in September, October and November of 2018 to get the most important features done in time.

In spite of best efforts, there was still an annoying bug in v4.0 that couldn't be reliably reproduced during testing and so a day later v4.0.1 was released to fix it.

There's still lots more planned for Sandpit (follow Sandpit to stay informed) - here's to another 10 years!

so are you ready to beat in ?
maps are well playing..and selection is nearly over..
there are few "complex" editions of script that i wonder if sandpit is able to handle or hammer or rmf ??
i mean i wonder if you played pov mod ? the ending map has the hero being shoot by a tank.. i want something new like the tank but fighting a geneworm ..

i am still searching a programmer.. [ most of them are real ************* a la sniper or like those who made |coop| mods : not really open when things are about sharing what they have in their pocket..

pov is a mod that looks like decay "extra map" where you play two aliens instead of two hew . the last mod website still running is : http://mods.davlevels.com/pointofview/ the same that handle the more famous azure sheep . the mod is quite very good but it has some boring parts.. one of them is in a giant base .. i use several parts [ the bests ] so that is no repetitive : i mean the mod makers are too much making very big maps with towns of doors of ladders but each room is not full of objects or actions.. it has a page here : https://www.moddb.com/mods/point-of-view and the one pointed by valve wiki marks deleted mod here : https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Point_Of_View
by now i use visual 2010 that compile very well the half-life and the opposing force githubs .. do i need the famous vc 2017 for compiling yours under windows ? i am ready to install it but i think of using another pc than the one having the 2010 that is up to date on a win 7 x64 . by the way most of my help will be "ideas.." like adding boxes to select animations of models or other "double or triple files comparison" of models : mostly their list of animations and then converting them for use in a single model.. [ you can see what i mean with the barney or scientists and others models of blue-shift , opposing force and hl "high def or low def models ] . for spirit of half life : i found few project at github .. https://github.com/Hammermaps-DEV/SOHL-V1.9-Opposing-Force-Edition is one that compiles and have few monsters ruinning but most of the time these "projects are waste of time and energy" . i spend a lot of energy trying to find members that knows how to programs.. i even asked ubisoft that has one of its main base in Montpellier [ that is next to my home ] but i wait their email reply...a month later.. i do not like to say that .. but these business are only bunch of suckers .. hiding their ignorances more than quickly giving what is asked.. i mean speaking french or english or chinese or else is "long" but is quite easy when "done" with the hl sdk : that is more the 20 years old : i should already have tons of dlls to tests.. and some at valve should give some dlls "taylored" for the same price as a hl : $9.99 instead of being the giant game shop it became .

i plan to use this one or parts of it : may be as the hazard course [ as full mod ] but i am also "inspired enough" to create the hasard course by making another mod : the mix of heart of evil with maps from residual life.. i posted a message at his page : https://www.moddb.com/mods/hl-residual-life .. this man is a good mappers , he creates good labs and big urban structures with roads... parking.. have a nice weekeend my friend

It should work fine with Visual Studio 2010 I think but I'm using Visual Studio 2019 now.

i played again your latest 4.1 sandpit.. the game play looks very cool and stable.. well done..
have you ever played svencoop ?or you were banned from their forum ? it happened to me.. and i was a beta tester... it was a plan by sniper to steal my work and eject me because i was good and very popular...that was at the time of sc3.. and decay..
but by now that is steam that promotes this badly programmed mod .. and it is free...
i mean you could try to create a sandpit-svencoop : that gives you an free half-life with they hunger mods.. plus a lot of npcs from opposing force plus few new one like the really good tor model .. of course the curent version is very buggy .. [ read their moddb page.. where i posted a little note.. ] but that can help you seeing what has to be done for my mod ;'] at least monsters... i have a lot of work with something i am currently working .. but i can promise good surprises if you team with me and have time for working..
start playing svencoop with your account or a new blank..[that is useful for servers..] then load the map stadium4 and go use a "table" Mr Tsschumann . i hope that will give you a lot of fun ..

sixcentgeorge no I've never really played it but I've considered a Sandpit plugin for it to use the improved engine. Haven't had the time to actually start.

i do not think using sc engine is wise.. especially if it is made by sniper.. [ he is very bad programmer...]
but you can download the mod for free with steam .. and replace the dlls and few others by your own ..
i do not think you are forced to play svencoop...it is more some "gift" from steam ... i had a row here with the moddb team about my mod..assault - strike .. my mod was here long ago before it started... it started few days after i posted images i made showing a strange bug of sc 4.7 at the open gl rendering level...
i made new image just for you.. https=//postimg.cc/gallery/kcm7g0i2/ replace the = by : or play my mod as a listen server with map asmap06 to see it "live" .. this bug is still here may be .. i never heard a word of snipper beside all the bugs i show in here or else... he is like the old mother in monsters inc... thinking he is the best while some others think the opposite about "his way of living cooperatively with human natures" .. i joke to much i am sure this bad complained i was doing that and lying for a "revenge" about the they hunger "false leak" .. he says to all beta members that i leaked his sc3.5 files..in 2007.. at this time in 2007 before i made a little work as beta member to make a beta for they hunger ; he was promising me there will be a joint publication of the new they hunger for hl2 and my port to coop .. his sc3.5 was so bad and unfinished that i made the port for sc3.... and if you read there : https://www.moddb.com/downloads/they-hunger-lost-souls-alpha-and-beta-builds you see that TH2 was far from being done.. so he lies to everybody every time all the days..and can not stop ..or he ll be caught..and loose "every thing.." .. try to create dlls for a coop play .. may be you can get the source files from decay.. i recently found the old members of the mod at instagram.. they look "wilds" and living in the jungles of south america .. i wonder why but they banned me the day after i followed them .. with "no word" .. no care.. i am not able to read in some coffee or teapots... lol

Last time I tried to use Sandpit in Sven Coop it didn't work - it didn't seem to want to load from a different directory, though possibly custom .dll files work.
I'm working on support for Half-Life Decay entities though.

that should be possible : if the "goldsrc engine" was not so buggy..
i mean saving ent directly while playing..sandpit..
i think more of creation of log files or save files..
i told you how i am used to work.. i load the map of mod in opposing force or in svencoop 3 or 4.7 [ not the latest that is too big to still be considered as a "mod" ]
then using some plugging of amxmodx i create log files with some info about positions in map or some screen captures with comment.. or by hand on a paper with a pen ;']
i replayed your mod , it is cool , but like you plan to add . comparing the sequence is a must have for it to become very usefull : like with barney and others models some are having "special animations" that can be great to check that and also try to operate the "portability" .
i did that already and the main difficulty is in the smd and the name of bones..: very old models made in the 2000 are not very complexes while latest models for hl have eyes , fingers and even able to speak...
by the way i have good news [ and bad that we can ignore..;'] the good news is that i created the super long story extended of half-life..
it is a mix using plenty of maps from many mods ; i do not want to spoil too much but i think i can say something about the ingredients..: maps & mods , plus the "Epic Ending With a Two Kings Battle" :

i mostly tested with op4 engine , with listen server or dedicated server ..all maps except few having some sequences are well running [ i used the dedicated server to test all maps in a row to see if i reach any limit [of models or memory.. like povc003 that cannot play under op4 because of the 512 models limit ] . i was forced to remove ba_canal1 , c1a4i , c4a3 , of0a0 , of1a5 , of2a3 , of3a2 because server goes off immediately . all others maps are passing in 12 h with a mp_timelimit of 2 .. [ this morning i found that the dedicated server can handle these maps correctly if i set it with one player only.. [ so it loads and change models and maps automatically..] if i use an other computer to connect to the pc running the dedicated opposing force server , then i get an error about maps being differents.. ]

i used most of the shl maps at the end , right after the final of hl . it is like a "second reboot" ; i open it with the map povc00 that shows the Xen Overlord (aka Tor) from svencoop .. instead of the vortigaunt ..

then the maps continues until the train in pov , there i change the map to the shl8 where it is an other train map in sweet half life ... at map 10 it is possible to use the shortcut and play shl11, but then the two stories : re-unite . the main thing i want to add / change is the power of the kingpin to give him the power to spawn white alien of sweet hl ; tor on is side is able to spawn vortigaunt or else..[ in svencoop ]

the bad news : if i can say so is the dav of the azure sheep and pov mods that does not want me to use "its" maps... i asked him if has the patent or copyright..of them ? he did not replied yet... so i bypass his "no" , i even think of selling the mod on steam for the price of half-life...to make few millions for when i ll be old.. what is your opinion about making money ? and use it for the game to hl2 ..
or may be porting this to unreal engine.. that is better .. i ll check the opinion of the guy that made the lambda project.. [ of course i do not want to share my work or energy with the black mesa mod .. ] i asked valve and gearbox to hire me for this as a writer. i ll soon will create a page here with more details .. i think i ll call it Hell-Life ..

That 512 model limit is really a pain - it would be great if the engine was open source.
And while money is nice, charging money for mods still doesn't fell quite right (though I did pay for Black Mesa - they've worked long and hard and it is now a game).

[part 2 : comment was too long : above 5.000 caracters ] plus unreal is not very expensive .. they take 5% percents when above $3000 every 3 months.. while valve "rewards" of using its old engine "not for free" is starting at $25.000 from the beginning.. only for havok : https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/sdk/uploading/distributing_source_engine and only sold at steam... and with all the money this valve make : they promote lazy americans or others americans coming from disneyzz but i never a mapper of some well known mods or a guy that made a metamod : like bailopan becoming a worker for valve.. https://www.bailopan.net/ despite he gave a lot of himself .. they do what they want of course.. of course ..but if you look at the web and websites talking about half-life there are none left.. no more hlspain or italia ..that made azure sheep and pov .. now valve does VR ..and does give games to those having bought expensive hardware kit .. not to those having the "full valve games" ... i am very not happy but i think my decision about stopping or using unreal 4 or soon 5 .. will have better results at end , asking for $10 is not very much for every body that loves playing..and we all have to pay bills for living... i do not think the same with bm or svencoop that are teams only selling others works and offering nothing to them .. have a look at the sc forum that is still used but no one can register.. interesting to prevent "banneds" to come back and ask for a retribution.. like the guy that added the script system to the mod.. an other european .. for bm they have closed the website and made a new one with an other name.. and of course both are showing no email .. like valve.. like in vegas or in life .. some are always ready to eat your money , energy for free.. but will never help.. instead some wait to be sure to "f**k you" to get what you have in your pockets and let you down.. that is the "american dream of living" i do not like NightMares..and do not think money can work.. but work makes money.. so try to make up your mind and see if you have solutions for maps.. i try decompilators , i ll check compilators : as sierra made hl abandonware : maps are free of use ; same with old mods that are in any way not protected..like says the link above : what you make with valve sdk must be free or you have to pay $25.000 ; that rule was also in hl sdk.. so no one can say anything in case of re-using a model and after a period [ most of the time 10 years ] nothing can be longer protected ..
i ll see and decide .. my "story" for hl ..is ready and gets its place next to the one i made for hl2 and doom3... i hope to be lucky to play them .. there is no hurry for me..to make money or releasing "game hits" there is no giant-fires on my back like in australia or california... have a good sunday..

for mods like yours .. 512 model limit should be a real trouble..the only good dude in the gaming world is john carmack...that was publishing his games with source for maps and editor plus later the code for programs .. despite hl won is now andanware : if you read august 2017 news at quark editor website : http://quark.sourceforge.net/archivednews.php?newsperiod=201708 ; no way to get the hands on it.. except the same motherf***s of svencoop that has also access to maps sources.. i had a reply from valve about my mod and the need of help : that was no..from a "writer of disneyzz" [ do not be surprised if gordon is now "georgina freewoman" under VR.. may be soon she ll have an instagram account : georginafollowfreewoman .. ] i reminded them that france and vivendi-sierra helped them ..but now with billions in the pants valve and gearbox are usa american business men and **** on french like trumpy or gwbushery ... by the way i feel steam is turning to be a very bad choice for game business .. it is a very expensive seller .. i also bought a copy at 6 euro of bm.. [and still did not play the xen.. ] then after a post in their community : i was banned [ long before beta..] so i can not post comments or ask for technical help.. same with svencoop..banned..right after making a topic at community..i wanted to discuss about bugs i found in 5.20 but had not enough time.. so i posted here but still no replay at moddb page of svencoop.. so to speak : bm made a lot of billion just by selling the free demo version that they no longer offer.. all that was related to bm and its forum : where they grabbed a lot of helps , ideas , models and money..is gone .. with the rest ..they are a bunch of mobs ..like snipper at svencoop that asks for help and stabs in back . i wonder if i drop everything...or if i go "mapping" with a tool like : HammUEr, a Hammer/Worldcraft map importer for Unreal Engine https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/marketplace/66198-hammuer-a-hammer-worldcraft-map-importer-for-unreal-engine that imports hl1 or doom3 maps [ i made a mix of it with roe..] that could be really a big jump to use the latest unreal engine.. i am sure you will love to play the final battle of kings as a kingpin or king Tor : throwing aliens like you do with sandpit.. [ that map would be using the decay mod engine in two players mod style ]
