Still among the living

News

Well it has been years since the last update on what is going. There has indeed been some activity on this ip over the years… just not as much as one would hope. Most of the time has been spent revamping the core ideas of the game and building various prototypes for it. The core aspect of Ruiner has gone through a complete overhaul. This includes it’s name, story, weapons, powers, and type of game.

One of the largest parts of the revamp was completed last year. The new story, powers, design of the main character and the enemies she will face. However all of this remains under lock and key until the day there is something worth showing. With the back story upgraded, this has caused me to figure out what is the best way to build this game. The setting and cast offers unique opportunities game play wise which did not exist before. Nor is there anything really out there to look for examples on how to best implant them. This is usually the case whenever your trail blazing a path no one else has walked.

Here is a rundown on some various bits of info on what has been going on and plans for the future.

-Various prototypes have been built for the game. This includes third person, first, and side view. Art styles have been looked at ranging from 8-bit, 2.5d and also early fps styles (think doom or quake).

-Depending on what form of game ends up showing the most promise which path I will take.

-It is something I work on in my spare time here and there. I will not guarantee it ever gets finished or resurfaces again. There will be no promises of coming soon or soonish… When something finally bears fruit it will be shown.

-The Doom 3 mod will not be continued. Years ago I did look into going stand alone with the mod. Unlike other D3 mods who went standalone; Ruiner uses stock and modified assets heavily. To go stand alone would be very close to building from scratch. It is not happening. The team has been disbanded for a very long time as well. Some members have have disappeared from the web entirely.

-If you wish to expand or modify the Ruiner, feel free to do so… This is part of why we released the source code.

-I am very aware there was a commercial game titled Ruiner released. Before they even released it, the ip was was re-branded internally. I hold no ill will towards them using the same title our mod did. Game development is tough work and I applaud them for creating the game. If and when this Ruiner returns, it will not be titled the same.

If and when something finally happens and feel concrete... It will be announced here.

I have one big problem, the mod works but the problem comes from the resolution. I load the game. It starts me out in the forest but I was in 1st person mode, remembering that this was supposed to be played in thirdperson, I changed the viewpoint but the character is in the middle of the screen instead of on the left of the screen like in the screenshots. I thought it was a resolution issue so I went to change the resolution from 640xsomething to 1600x900(or 1200, don't remember now) and reloaded the mod. I've noticed however that it doesn't make the change. Any fixes

This was the first Doom 3 mod that i ever played and the only one.
I did loved so much and no regrets :)

This is going to sound off the wall but I want help running Ruiner... on my smartphone :)

Through the android port of the dante engine, packaged in an app called Diii4A, I can run many mods and maps at a decent framerate with all the features of the Doom 3 engine present. The only mod I'm having no luck with is Ruiner. I get an error stating that getEntityHealth is an unknown event (doom_events.script, line 16). I don't know why this error is popping up on my little android install, the android port is compiled from the latest patched version of Doom 3. I even checked, 1.3.1.1304

I know that this mod only needs the base Doom 3 base as I am running it happily on my main desktop. It's just bugging me that it is throwing script errors on the phone.

i do not know anything about running it on android. Ruiner has higher system requirements than default Doom 3. Your welcome to poke around the source code and see where the conflict could be coming from. The mod needed to be started with a shortcut and not from the mod menu in order to work correctly back in the day.

no it did happen. There were many technical road blocks that came up very early in development. Then some massive changes in my life happened which caused it to be stopped. As they say, you never know what could happen one day.

Impressive. There aren't much 3rd person shooters running with id tech 4.
