You are Kovac, a senior agent in the covert Special Black Operations unit. You're deployed to Black Mesa to halt the next phase of the science team's plan after HECU forces are unsuccessful in stopping Freeman from launching the Omega Satellite delivery rocket... ...but you fail, the procedure ends up creating massive portal storms in the sky sending you and your team through a void to oblivion and back. You wake up almost twenty four hours later; the military has withdrawn, and everyone and everything besides your fellow Black Operators are now a target. To make matters worse, another hostile and more powerful alien faction has appeared in the chaos, further complicating the situation. The incident can no longer be contained, you must link up with other Black Ops units and prepare to wipe the facility from the map once and for all...
WOW! Not only did Dark Matter make it into the Top 5 Upcoming Mods, we came 2ND place!! That's absolutely incredible!!!
It fills me with such joy that so many people are interested in a little ol' Half-Life 1 mod, I knew that when I formulated the project there would be a fair few out there would want to see the Black Mesa Incident from the Black Ops perspective as a full expansion Gearbox style... but I never expected interest on this scale! This year has been.. well, mostly awful honestly, but coming second in the Upcoming Mod Of The Year awards for me means that 2020 isn't a complete disaster!
It's all the more awesome that we're next to Entropy Zero 2, which is another mod with a bad guy protagonist in the HL2 universe! If you haven't played the demo and the original mod on Steam, you're missing out, so get to it!
Congratulations to Kingdoms Of Arda for winning the vote, and everyone else who made it into the Top 5! Most of all THANK YOU each and every one of you who voted for Dark Matter, none of this would be possible without your support!
I've posted images of a new chapter, the first scene from the post-Nihilanth Xen environments! Further areas from the borderworld and much more to come in the first quarter of 2021!
See you next year!
You definitely deserve to be, on the second place, since this kind of original Mods are quite rare! Plus, it's really amazing, that Half-Life 1, is still played, after more than two decades, when it was first released!
I remember, before your mod, there were two mods who dared putting you in Black Op's boots,
the well known Black Ops which was overall well-done but overall disappointing (missions in the city??), besides its final act in Black Mesa matching OG's events, too bad it ended too quickly,
and the lesser known Black Death, extremely difficult Russian (untranslated) mod and overall crappy in terms of gameplay and bland mapping, once again besides a surprising final fight against... Freeman himself.
Description updated 😉
Black Ops is odd because it contradicts OP4 with some silly plot involving getting The Package from a random scientist in a city (looks like the dev overlooked that the nuke is inside an ICBM in "Friendly Fire"), and then there's the Industrial area and prison. Then it ends with a random re-envisioning of the parking garage, it doesn't make much sense.
Ultimate Attack is better, but it's just an OP4 mod with new models for fgrunts and weapons.
Never played Black Death, doesn't sound like I'm missing much...
Be in no doubt, Dark Matter will have a LOT more to it than previous examples!
You forgot Half-Life: Ultimate Attack, that is the best of them
Once again congrats
Well deserved 😎
Once again congratulations.. You most certainly deserved it. I would've never suspected to see another hl1 ever again besides "The Core" winning the best upcoming mod of the year award.
Kovac with teeth is terrifying.
