About

FX:Galaxy, also known as the FXmod, is a long-term modification project for the Homeworld series that aims to tell the story of the franchise's eight main races in one game. Started back in 2003, FX:Galaxy continues the legacy of its HW2C predecessor while at the same time tapping into the new modding possibilities that came with the 2015 Remaster.

Our goal is to recreate the raw excitement vibe of the original 1999 game in the remaster. At the same time we seek to polish, enhance and expand on the regular Homeworld experience, and do many new things that push the boundaries of the Homeworld engine - all while paying close attention to the lore, and making sure the game still is (and feels) 'Homeworld'. Read on to discover the project that has received acknowledgement from Gearbox Software itself.

Features

  • 8 Playable Races: All eight races from HW1 & HW2 are available as fully playable factions. Continue your adventure as one of the overhauled stock factions (Hiigaran/Vaygr/Taiidan/Kushan), or come see how we brought player favorites like the Progenitors, Kadeshi, Turanic Raiders and Bentusi (WIP) to life!
  • More Strategy, More Challenges: All factions come with their own unique units, abilities and playing styles, bringing a vast amount of new strategical options to the table. Unit abilities play a bigger role, and with a greatly improved AI the galaxy is more dangerous a place than ever before. Will you rise to the challenge and draw out your faction's full potential?
  • New Content: Continue to explore the Homeworld Universe in 5 new Single-Player Missions, hone your skills in 2 unique Challenge Modes (Skirmish/Survival), or spice up the new 8-faction experience even further with 3 new Gameplay Modes (Competitive Deathmatch/Artifact Retrieval/Bentusi Defense) and 10+ new Maps - with more to come.
  • Unique Features: Our drive to innovate has led us to push the boundaries of the Homeworld Engine for over 15 years. Customize the in-game BGM with our HW Music Player, discover the FXmod via our own Achievements System, Name your Ships, or co-operate with AI players like they were human players via a reputation-based AI Diplomacy System - and much more. You can view a list of the FXmod's most prominent unique features [here] or in-game.
  • 40+ New (HD) Units: Some of these are realizations of original Homeworld concept art, others were designed by us from scratch based off that race's lore and aesthetic. Summon the newly discovered Progenitor Frigates or Kadeshi Nagual from the voids of space, unleash new gamechangers like the Turanic HeavyGun Cruiser and Taiidan Battleship, or check out our take on old favorites - such as a re-textured version of the Turanic Outpost from HW:Cataclysm.
Note: Since the FXmod was originally a HW2C project some units still use HW2+ textures. You can view our remastering progress [here].
  • Enhanced Graphics & FX: New Animations (e.g. Turanic smoke, Progenitor energy), Weapon FX (e.g. Ion Beams, Kadeshi energy weapons), Subsystem Models, Blueprints, Sounds, a tweaked HWRM Shader, and much more for prying eyes (and ears!) to discover.
  • Vanilla Improvements: Tweaks to existing units (e.g. HGN Bombers can now rotate their turrets to attack from any angle as originally intended), removal/merging of obsolete units, overhauled Research & Production trees and other, ever-ongoing balance adjustments.
  • Newbie Friendly: We all have to start somewhere. Our own Tutorial Missions will help you get started, and our 33-stage Challenge Mode ("The Shimmering Path") will let you hone you skills as you go. You'll find various other aides in-game, on ModDB (FX Strategy Guide), and of course our Discord!
  • Supports LAN, Multiplayer, and direct TCP/IP.

Under Development..

  • RPG Mode: Our most ambitious project yet, our ultimate goal is to create a unique spin on the traditional Single-Player mode that turns Homeworld into a sandbox-themed 4X RPG. Live travel between maps via special hyperspace gates that 'connect' all maps in real time, receive and complete missions from NPCs, purchase or assemble units and do many other things, just like in a real RPG game. You may even encounter units from past FXmod releases or other mods as special NPCs (easter eggs).

Overall, we intend to create a "living galaxy", that lets you both experience new stories, explore, and experience daily life in the Homeworld universe all at once.
On Homeworld's 20th Anniversary we officially announced RPG Mode to the public. You can view the RPG Mode-themed newsletters and previews we have posted since here: Newsletter 1, [Video] Alpha 0.1 Testroll
  • More HD Models: We continue to upgrade our unit textures and models to HWRM quality, as well as design brand new units in full HD. You can periodically see previews of these in our [Images] section. We also intend to further polish and improve our custom animations, fx, and everything else that make it all look prettier.
  • More Content: Our third goal is to create additional mini-campaigns, and to ultimately have one for each race in the mod. Besides these you can look forward to additional gameplay modes, maps, achievements, and more.
  • Other things that take advantage of HWRM's modding possibilities. Stay tuned!

What do the players say?

"Your work is really good. You’ve been able to do many things that really stand out in the community and impress the guys here." (Source)
-Brian Burleson (Gearbox Software, Senior Producer)

"Possibly the closest Homeworld has seen to an unofficial expansion. A must-play."
-Rockpapershotgun.com (Top 5 Mods for Homeworld Remastered)

"Absolutely love it. Adds far more depth to the game and rids me of my anguish I feel when other races are present in an RTS you can't play as."
-Panther Legion (Steam)

"Great mod! I definitely recommend this to anybody wishing to enhance their experience. Not only are you given extra races to play with (like four from the vanilla game), but each race plays very different from each other."
-Phoenix Rising (Steam)

"Finally got to play Kadeshii, something I've wanted to do since I was five or six. Thank you, sir, for fulfilling my childhood dreams."

RSS Articles

As of 27 July 2015 we only upload stable (tested) releases to our ModDB and main Steam page. The reason for this is that we noticed that each time we update our mod it has new bugs in it, and some of them are very annoying. However, the Steam workshop forces every player to use the latest version of the mod, so people cannot use older, stable versions.

This means that both ModDB and our Steam page will see less frequent releases, but that each release that does appear here will have more content in it and be stable with relatively few bugs.

Users who have access to the Steam version of Homeworld Remastered and enjoy the FXmod can subscribe to our BETA release page (here). BETA releases appear more frequently, but are untested (=likely several bugs). With your help we can track them down faster and finalize the next official release. Thank you!

JUST got into Homeworld today thanks to the Steam sale. I really enjoy space RTS games. Really dying for something akin to EVE Online but as a lighter, single player RPG. Played this mod thanks to Steam Workshop and It's really solid! You've done a great job with this. I'm excited to see the RPG addition you've got planned in the future!

By far my favourite mod for remastered, my only complaint is that I nearly had a heart attack fighting the Turanics, when I hovered over one of their resource collectors and read the name. For a second there I thought it was the actual Junkyard Dog from HW1.

In FX there's the idea that the TUR started colonizing worlds, and to meet their needs they just salvage and use whatever they can get, being space pirates and all. This is also the setting of their mini-campaign. It may be why you see re-engineered units like the JJ Dogs, or crude units like the Vulcan Frigates.

Huge performance issue, this game barely use 10% of my CPU/GPU and it only render 15FPS, please make it use more hardware and draw more FPS.

Were you playing a match with lots of different races and large fleets on max. settings? Homeworld Remastered has a hardcapped GPU memory limit of ~2.5GB, performance drops are expected as you approach this limit.

I was playing a 8 players map with 7 AI, after checking with MSI Afterburner I guess yes, the game reached that stupid 2.5GB cap, is there a way to remove the cap or to change it?

Unfortunately there isn't, as far as I'm aware. The Remaster uses a tweaked version of the old HW2 engine (2006), and has inherited its many of its flaws and limitations.

What you can try is to save>load the game / restart HWRM. It is notorious for frame drops if left running for a long period of time.

If that didn't help you probably hit the hardcap. In that case, the best I can do is recommend you to play with a lower selection of races (e.g. 2+ players using the same faction = less to load), stick to max. 6p matches and the default unit cap, and/or tone down the texture quality/size limit.

The base game will work fine, but once you get to adding stuff (mods) the harsh reality is that the game is not very supportive of giant endgame space battles.

Congratulations! There is a known bug where the game will crash if you finish Stage 33 with a Light Cruiser with the Annihilator Array turret built in your fleet. It will be fixed in the next release, so for now try to retire that module or scuttle the unit before you complete the stage.

You can find the details for becoming part of the thing that comes after Stage 33 on the forum tab here: Moddb.com
