Beautiful Doom is the grandfather of most enhancement mods, including the well-known Brutal Doom. First released back in 2008 this mod aims to improve each and every single object in Doom, making them smoother, more impressive visually and having better sounds while retaining VANILLA gameplay. Keeping original vanilla gameplay is the core of Beautiful Doom. However, for those, who like to spice things up there are 3 weapon sets to choose from and a number of features to tweak!

I've not done any announcements in a while — sorry to those who follow this mod via ModDB.

I have good news! For a few months now the next version of Beautiful Doom has been under development, and while I've not made a full-blown release, those development versions are now available on GitHub! You can find them here: Github.com

Just download the whole thing as an archive and run it as you'd run any other mod (instructions are also at the bottom of that page).

The new version is being transferred from DECORATE to the new scripting language introduced in GZDoom: ZScript. It allows for an insane customizability, and thus I've been able to introduce a bunch of cool features.

The most important one is Modern Guns: a third weapon set that changes gameplay further while still fulfilling the same functions. But don't fret: you can still select Vanilla and Enhanced guns at any point; they will not be discontinued.

The basic features of Modern Guns are:

  • Non-energy weapons have recoil and require to be reloaded.
  • Weapons are overall more powerful but usually with trade-offs: the chainsaw might get clogged with blood and jam, has to be cleaned with alt.attack; Plasma Rifle can overheat (but the heat can be dispersed manually at any point); overcharging Modern BFG can explode in your face.
  • You can use Quick Kick while any weapon (except BFG and Chainsaw) is selected and even while it's being reloaded.
  • Bullets are projectiles, they have travel time and damage falloff (which is stronger for some weapons, like SSG, and weaker for others, such as Assault Rifle).

Not a fan of the gibs sounds. The gibbing sound itself is fine (the moment the body explodes) but the gibs bouncing sound off, like a balloon of jelly getting squished. Doesn't feel like slabs of meat kissing the ground.

I think I found a bug, or maybe I've done something wrong:

When using the Vanilla or Enhanced weapons mode, all the weapons have infinite ammo. The ammo counter just doesn't update each time I fire. However, this doesn't happen while using the Modern weapons mode.

I am using GZDoom v4.0 64 bits and running the latest Beautiful Doom dev build from GitHub.

maybe since you are using a dev build of a mod try using the dev build of gzdoom
