Type 45 is the Premier Air Defense Destroyer developed and deployed by Royal Navy. Boasting the advanced Principle Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS), the ship utilizes the state-of-the art Sampson and S1850M (modified SMART-L) radar, and the highly agile Aster 15 & Aster 30 missile. The Sampson radar, is a light weight multi-functional radar, boasting a maximum tracking number of 1000+ targets, at a range of 400km. Due to its light weight, the radar antenna is put on the very top of the mast of Type 45 (The small ball on top is the Sampson radar), giving it an edge over its American counterparts, the Aegis equipped Arleigh Burke class destroyers with lower radar antenna: it can see farther to the horizon due to the curvature of Earth. And this is vital in the anti-air warfare, as speeding super sonic anti-ship missile at low altitude would only give seconds to react, the extra reaction time as given by a longer detection range of the Sampson on top, would be a decisive edge. Another advanced radar system carried by Type 45 is the S1850M, or SMART-L. The L-band (longer wave length than Sampson's S-band), S1850M is more effective in detecting small RCS objects at long range. The S1850M can also track 1000+ targets, at range in excess of 400km( after software upgrade, it can reach up to 480km, and for Anti-ballistic missile purposes, it can extend to 1000km in space). The paired up Sampson and S1850M is a great combination: as the Sampson excels in tracking and providing missile guidance, the S1850M excels in volume searching the sky.
Although boasting the prowess in anti air warfare, the destroyer's other aspects remains dependent on future upgrades: It lacks ASW weapons on-board other than the carried helicopters, and its sonar,MFS-7000 is only adequate for self-defense purposes. It also lack strike length Sylver VLS, limiting its land attack capabilities to its 113mm Gun. It also lacks advanced anti-ship missiles, currently equipping only with harpoon missiles.
