The Rafale is the french multi-role aircraft designed to both operate from land and from sea. Featuring a canard design, digital fly by wire, and a lifting body, the Rafale is both both highly maneuverable and agile. Compared to its close cousin the Eurofighter, the Rafale also put emphasis on its air to ground capabilities: with its low wing loading of around 300kg/m^2, it can carry a very large payload of 9500kg, compared to 7500kg of the Eurofighter, and the much larger F-15E's 10400kg. Rafale can carry a large array of air-to-surface weapons, including the rocket assisted guided bomb AASM, with a range of 55km at altitude, the cruise missile Storm Shadow and Apache anti-runway missile, the Exocet anti ship missile, and even the ASMP-A, a 500km, supersonic nuclear missile with yield of 150-300 kilo tons. Compared to the Eurofighter, the Rafale carries a smaller AESA radar (Starting 2013, with the Rafale number C137), a IRST and TV sensor, OSF similar to that of Eurofighter's EuroFIRST PIRATE. The Rafale can also carry the Meteor missile like the Eurofighter, giving it similar advantage to its aerial opponents. In self defense is where the Rafale excels, it carries the advanced integrated SPECTRA self defense suite, boasting Digital Radio Frequency Memory Jammer, Eelectronic Support Measures (Used to detect enemy radiators, like radar), Spherical vision missile warning receiver and chaff and flare dispensers. In the future, it would also carry electronic, active decoys for better self protection. The defense systems of Rafale would provide the aircraft the means to deny the first attack from opponents with longer range sensors, like the Eurofigher, and would also provide the opponents position via the ESM, giving a chance of counter attack.
The Rafale is expected to become the sole manned combat aircraft of France in the near future.
