The Atago Class is the Premier Air Defense Destroyer employed by the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. Featuring the Aegis Combat system with 4 fixed panel phased array radar, the AN/SPY-1D, the Atago class is specialized in area air defense missions. It carries 96 SM-2 missiles with a range of 170km at mach 3.5. It can also carry the specialized, mach 8.8, SM-3 anti-ballistic missiles missiles with a range of 700km, costing 9+million USD each, for the purpose of area ballistic missile defense. The Atago class is also the one of the most costly Aegis equipped ship, costing 1.48 billion USD each, compared to the original American Arleigh Burke class's 1 billion. For surface targets, the ship carries the indigenous Type 90 SSM, with a range of 150-200km, a warhead of 260 kg, and a top speed of 1150 (mach 0.93), essentially a longer range, higher payload and faster version of the Harpoon missile used in American ships. For anti-submarine warfare, the ship carries vertical-launched anti-submarine rocket, with a light torpedo on its top, with a range of 22km. The torpedo it carries is the Mk46 or Mk54 torpedo, both with a top speed of 74.1km+. The Mk46 can reach a range of 10.9km, yet the Mk54 is of public unspecified range. The ship can also carry the towed array sonar, for long range submarine detection at range of ~100km, the system is lacking in later American Burke class ships.
