FD-2000 (HQ-9) is the Area Air Defense Missile system developed and deployed by the Chinese military. It has a maximum range of 120km, a max mach number of mach 4.2, and a warhead weighing 180kg.
Known in China as the high profile "The Ninth Engineering Project", the FD-2000 (meaning Defensive Shield 2000) or HQ-9 (Red Flag 9),is the very first area air defense missile system developed by China, as it wished to counter the aerial advantage as held by the American Naval Fleet back in the 96 Taiwan Strait Missile Crisis. Although cross-strait relation has become more peaceful and National unification of China effectively underway with RMB usable in Taiwan, the missile's function persisted to be prominent, as it has become the premier air defense weapon for the Capital of China, Beijing Area.
The missile is capable of intercepting both endoatompsheric and exoatomspheric targets, like ballistic missiles, as it is controlled by both the aerodynamic control surfaces and the thrust vectoring control surfaces.
