052C is the Premier Air Defense Destroyer employed by the PLA Navy.
Featuring 4 fixed panel phase array radar, the destroyer is the counterpart to the US Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer. The warship is armed with 48 HHQ-9 (Sea Red Flag-9) long range anti-air missile, with a max range of 120 km, max mach number of mach 4.2 and a warhead of 180 kg. The missile is the navalised version of the HQ-9 (Red Flag-9) air-defense missile system, is know within China as the prominent No.9 Engineering project, the first area air-defense missile system developed in China. Besides its anti-air prowess, the ship can also be equipped with the 8 C805 anti-ship/land attack cruise missiles, with a max range of 500km, a max mach number of mach 0.9 and the ability to conduct sea skimming attacks against surface targets. For submarine threats, the destroyer carries the Yu-7 light weight torpedo, with a max range of 7.5+ km, a max speed of 87+ km/h, and a warhead of 45 kg. An additional 100mm naval gun, 2 30mm close in weapon system and decoy/ASW rocket launchers completes the on-board armament of the destroyer.
The 052C is the one of the most advanced surface combatant deployed by the PLA navy, its successor, the 052D at the time this article is being written (Jan 11 2014), is under sea trials. The 052D features improved radar, a common modular vertical launch system, and the ability to launch vertical launched cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine rockets.
