(131 votes)All of the above
Never stolen anything, but I have gotten code from other people thats been used (with permission, of course). But if anything, use tutorials
If i stolen some code than it would be the actuall games i am moding and editing it to react different. Not other moders code. What ****** me off is when other moders take a code or idea from my mod and someone tells em that something similar is in my mod and they claim how their will be much better and more advanced even thoe they never release the mod in the end.
I've stolen every bit of code that was ever written and blended it together to make the slowest running Doom remake on Source.
No, seriously - I use tutorials a twatload. I tend to code everything myself, or download source code from the tutorials and edit it for my needs.
Stolen!
It is 100% custom built, however originally when I was new to PHP, MySQL, Apache I referred to others work, tweaked it, changed it, read tutorials etc so I believe I am 'All of the Above'
Besides it be impossible to make anything without looking at what others have done and use that as your base / starting point. No need to reinvent the wheel.
I think 99% of modders will fall into this category :D
That is true. The only way a modder can learn is by looking at other peoples work, looking at their mistakes and trying make his own work better.
Used others work for reference (tutorials)
not anymore
but used to
all my work but I looked at others to see how they did it. Technically, if you are part of any discussion on a modding site you at least fall in to this.
Worst case is when people steal others work & then say nobody is allowed to use it as a base. Very wrong. :(
There should be a seperate "stolen" & "borrowed" choice too. Some mod teams will let you use their stuff if you ask. Then it's "borrowed." :)
Never stolen, and I don't ever intend to. And if we're talking about mapping I'd rather try to recreate anything than decompile, even if it's only for reference. I think you're more likely to gain more from the experience if you go through the same steps off your own back than simply carbon-copy something.
Mind you, there is a number of mods ideas that I've liked the idea of but that I haven't seen go into development. I make a note of the ones that look really promising for later projects, although I always make a point of keeping the creator's name (and if possible, contact details) so that they can be credited for the original concept. About half the mod concepts I have are my original concepts and the other half are elaborations of others' ideas.
As far as influences go, in modding it's inescapable to produce a mod which hasn't been influenced by other creative content whether it's games, books, films, music or life. I do think it's important to give an indication of where your ideas have come from. Afterall, if you like it, you're probably gonna want to introduce it to other people.
Editing **** doesn't make it yours... I hate those ********* that edit code and claim it theirs...
ALL OF THE ABOVE, BABY!
98% was made from scratch and NEVER edited anothers work...
Edited anothers work - its mine now
MODS = Made On Developer's Source
All mods use somebody elses work. Most of the time that is the developers, other times it is fellow modders.
I try to only use developers and my own work, but i might take a look at yours too.
I've done it all.. Now I'm going to make all by myself, except coding I need to borrow a bit here and there....
I don't mind the looking into other peoples work as a reference. but to steal others work. That is something different. There is a mod that has been released for Half life2 that uses models from a game that came out using the hl2 engine. ( Vampire Bloodlines ) Other people besides the makers of the mod have stolen from the game. IE there is a model of a girl in a bikini that was taken from the game and claimed to be someone else's work. When it was not. ( was also placed into the mod on top of that )
The funny thing is these people cannot possibly get permission to do what they are doing. Unless they personally know the people who worked on the Vampire Bloodlines game. Even then they will likely be told no.
