Post news Report RSS Mod DB v4 known bugs

We'd like to think we are perfect, but unfortunately v4 is a complex piece of machinery err site... and there are issues and features missing. Here is a list.

Posted by on

The following features are currently missing from the Mod DB v4 and will be implemented as soon as possible:

 • Forums
 • Private Messaging System
 • Topsites
 • Help Wanted
 • Mod Watch list (click the updates button to view updates from the mods you watch)
 • Video support (videos can be uploaded but are not playable just yet)
 • Mod teams (your team list is gone, you will have to create a group and link that with your mod now)

The following are known bugs which will be addressed as soon as possible:

 • All feature content is fugly (it needs to be updated to work with the v4 design)
 • The WYSIWYG text editor does not format HTML in a good way
 • Google search (top of screen) doesn't work well yet because google has not updated its index

Is the final design? This blue/black and bits of pink interface? Its horrible and everything is broken, my news and features have dissappeared, no comments, the "READ MORE/HIDE" thing is very annoying, i dislike how its displayed in every sectiom, I hate the way everything works currently, the little gimmick in blank sections theres just no need.

I would like to see a feature to change the user inferace back to what it was, i cant see why that wouldnt be possible because even myspace can do it lol

You have got a lot to do to convice me...and i mean A LOT!

You can select a moddb retro theme by clicking the link above. News and all that will show up soon, we need to run the cronjob script which will fix all the data relationships.

Thats because we wrote a script to convert v3 information into the v4 format. However because v4 worked differently, a lot of the information you see on the site will be presented badly at the moment. We will try and fix up old information as best as we can.

Having said this all new content added to the site from here on in will obviously include all of the information you need in the summary + image areas.

A guide on what has changed and how to access the relevant changed tools/features is in the works.

Please don't simply comment and say "X is horrible" Provide constructive criticism, for example,

"The news system is horrible because it doesnt show large pictures or features"

I'll hold my tongue on the stats and feature article code atm while you guys get everything setup but I'd like to point out that the first image of any image gallery you go to right now is fuxored a bit...

Really diggin' the retro theme, nice work Scott.

What's the point in having all of these console tabs? Is the comments section for mods gone?

I did provide conructive criticism lol

Yay its black and red again w00t.

I dont understand the "summary" and "description" bits on my mods profile, when i go to edit it it says i need only 80 characters for description...huh? And only 1000 for summary...

What happened to the 5000 character 1 box thingy? It seems that i can no longer edit it because it says my MOD homepage URL is not valid aswell.

Updated this so on the "main" page the full description shows by default. This gives you the power to show what you want on your profiles landing page.

On all of the other pages the summary is shown.

Oh sorry for another post but you should consider adding an edit function to comments lol.

Ok the "summary" box, please allow us to use HTML and line breaks and bold etc, i want to use this summary but as an "update" kind of feature, I reckon that would work best because i like orgasnising my profile :)

Keep the feedback coming. We have a ton of work we are still doing on v4. At the moment it feels a little wierd because we have added group support and yet nothing links through to the right groups / engines. But over the next few weeks while we iron things out it will all start to make sense believe me!

It looks nice, but it looks empty.
The older one looked very well put together... this is shiny, but not "full."
I trust this will come together... but... it's a bit unnerving.

I'm glad to see the new classic theme :D did someone listen to my suggestion? :D I think he did :D. Good work.

Meanwhile how exactly does editing work now. I tried editing my games and I could only do it once.. Please don't tell me we have to re-auth everything now :(.

Also do we really need the "Next Image" and "Previous Image" in the Media section? because we've already got the arrows and they work pretty well as it is. And meanwhile I found a bug where any image over the maximum size fills up the entire webpage.

I also think that having banners as a requirement kinda sucks, why can't we have just a generic blank one without having to make a custom banner? because I mean sometimes its just great to get some information up and running without putting too much work into it right away.

Oh and btw Neuromancer may be the first Mobile game to reach the database :D. But yeah nice work intense on the Multiplatform thing, and I love the new tab system too, now I have PC+Mac+Linux+Mobile :D so only the platforms that I give a **** about right now :D.

Nice work, definately am loving the new site and can't wait till the new forums are up.

OK here goes. First off, I may come across as sounding pretty critical, but feedback is what makes things better. I call it tough love. I am a fan of the direction Moddb is taking and the ideas v4 is trying to express, but there are some issues.

Site Graphics / Layout
- New logo is good but the rest of the box borders just don't fit it. They are too simplistic and need to be lifted to make them pretty. The logo is retro, the heavy black lines are just basic. The tabs suffer horribly from this look and the pink is just not nice. The whole website just comes across as very flat and unengaging. I'm not saying this just because I don't like change, I'm saying it because aesthetically it needs some work.
- Reviews page (and others) start blank. This doesn't make the site very engaging. If you change it to display the latest topics it will make ppl read it and spend longer on the site (ad revenue, etc.) AND it will give newcomers a good idea of what Moddb at a glance. For 'Mods' this should be the most recently updated mods (note: different to news page as this includes any change that shows a mod is alive, not just news).
- Engines: interesting, I'd like to see where it goes.
- PSP, DS, etc. tabs. I like the direction on getting the bedroom console developers involved. It will need a lot of work in getting tutorial resources together for it to become established.

Tutorials
- Level Design/Principles should be changed to Practical/Theory or Mechanics/Design. Also 'Mapping' as a whole should be replaced by 'Level Design'. 'Mapping' relates to a lot of disciplines in game development such as AI mapping, texture mapping, project mapping and 'making maps' mapping.
- You have 'Tester' and 'Quality Assurance' in the General category. I'd suggest you merge these into 'Quality Assurance/Testing' or 'QA/Testing' since they are both the same thing but not everyone would know what QA relates to.
- Development in General seems to be to be a little vague. I'd suggest you bring all of the sections in the Management category under the 'General' heading, and rename 'Leading' to 'Management'. 'Leading' is not the same thing as 'Management', but Management would cover everything associated with 'Leading'.
- 'HUD' should be changed to 'UI' or 'User Interface' so that it incorporates in-game menus as well.
- I like the fact Sound is given subcategories and more importance in general.

Groups
- Is it really necessary to force all mods to make a group? Have you considered the loss of networking this will cause when attempting to find old contacts from old projects?
You should really migrate all the +modwatch and developer groups into one mod's community group. E.g. Insurgency would have a set of normal members (modwatchers) and developers (from team info). Having to remake your groups is just frustrating when it could be revolutionised and made better with no extra effort from the user.

Member Profiles
- All comments have been LOST? You have essentially wiped the diaries and memories of your entire userbase. I'd urge in the strongest possible terms to migrate the old comments onto each member's blog page. Deleting their history will only leave them disenfranchised.
- 'Location' should be admin only. It's just a bit Big Brother to have everyone seeing what pages I'm looking at. I don't mind admins doing it because they are in a position of trust. But I don't want people I don't trust following my every move.
- Karma points: like it, very in the spirit of modding.
- Country: useful, perhaps, but potentially discriminatory. You might rule out a candidate for a position before speaking to them because you believe they are an x-national when in fact they are just living there and won't have any problems with the language. Up and downs on this one.

I think the biggest issue for me is that the look is really flat and lifeless and it could be jazzed up a bit with only some minor details like highlights/lowlights and some more vibrant colour combinations (where's the yellow?).

---

Overall: exiting direction, exciting ideas, just needs some polish. :)

I am considering adding the "comments" back to profiles. None of the data was lost I just removed this because it was a feature that was abused too much. I may make it show just the last 5 comments or something.

Also you can make yourself "invisible" if you dont want people to track you online.

Platforms seem broken. If I click on "Linux" for example on my game profile I end up with an error page. Also the layout is broken compared to the first version. Buttons are wrapping around getting clipped by display:none and can barely be clicked anymore ( 1 pixel drama ).

What about getting back the bug tracker? More useful than collecting comments here.

(more stuff :P)

As you can see:
- (bold) and other tags not working. If you are not supporting formatting tags or smileys, you need to change the text in the comment posting box that reads: "1000 characters maximum, is allowed - only text." to say "1000 characters limit; HTML formatting and smileys are not supported - text only" instead.
- Also when you go over the character limit the warning reads 2000 character maximum and the original warning reads 1000 character.
- When you go to a new platform page you can get disorientated. I suggest platform specific messages for "Latest News" and "Latest Downloads" (e.g. "Latest Wii News"). When you go to a platform site with no news it gives you the impression the site is not working, especially when you then click on 'mods' and all the mods have disappeared (because there are no -Wii- mods).

A mod's various feeds aren't added to the page header's link elements. There's only the site-wide one in there. This stops people from using their browser's interface to find the feeds.

Whats this bloody "This blog post has been deleted, it will not be shown to normal members" Thing? Although my news post is clearly visible?

I was talking about self-submitted news primarily. I see the predicament, but an exception rule could surely be created for all user-submitted news on their own mod.

Something that's been bugging me is that when you upload an image to be your avvie and it's length and width or too big, even a little, it won't auto scale it down to fit, so I can't have an avvie as a result.

Please fix this :( .

Hey, just giving feedback on the site. The big THEMES tab close to the top just looks WAY too big for what it is. I'd rather have that option in your profile settings and just leave the banner on top for the ads (unless blocked(like mine :D))
