The Grey development team is working hard on the mod, and we are excited to announce some donator-only content!

Posted by MagnumPI on Jan 24th, 2012

Hello all, this is MagnumPI, one of the modelers for the Grey mod. I have been working on a special weapon for the mod, the double barrel shotgun. This gun is a staple for any horror game, and our new texture artist, Crash, has done a great job with the texture.

This weapon will be exclusively for people who donate to our development team. The double barrel has a slower reload time, but it is very powerful. Ashkandi is also working on an awesome new enemy to use your double barrel shotgun on, which is also going to be exclusive to donators.

But that's not all!

People who donate will also be put into the credits, so everyone who downloads this mod will know how awesome you are for contributing to this mod.

Well that's about it for now, and please click the link below (or the banner) to get to our Paypal page!

Hmm. Link doesn't work for me. I'd like to donate, but it just takes me to a page that says "Fatal error."

Donate for a mod that isn´t done? mmmh. I´m fine with people making some profit of their hard work but i´d ask for donations giving away special content like this weapon ONCE the mod is released.

Cry of Fear is doing the same exact thing, so I guess we're hopping on that bandwagon :)

It also gives the developers the incentive to finish and release the product.

Asking for donations to give content is like taking money for dlcs. The best games dont take money for dlcs.

It's just a thank you for those who support us. The whole mod is a free DLC though ;)

I don't think that's true. If we are talking about retail games, then plenty of DLC content that requires a separate purchase is worth it. However, I'm curious to know which games you played that had free DLC that you think are greater than games that charge for them.

We have a lot of work in the mod (i have 1650 hour in source sdk and it's only me) and some people supporting, helping us for this. We give them this double barrel shotgun, credit and other cool stuffs as a thank you for the support. Thats all mate. :)

After a while DLCs become free. The Heroic map pack and cold storage later more packs from Halo 3 became free. Some other games have downloadable content which are free. Specially a few xbox 360 where you get a few new guns or mods for free.

Honestly Im not a fan of "donator" giving priveldges no matter how supportive I am of the mod. This is no down on the mod as Id love Grey to come out.

You are not forced to donate so why are you complaining? If you don't donate you will still play the mod for free, on DLC's if you don't pay you don't play, and if you donate at least you will have some recognition on the mod for your help. I don't see nothing bad with this for the contrary and is a way for modders to have a incentive to better the mod and then self's.

p.s -You guys also need to realize that you are not buying the mod (game) nor the promise of its completion (but it will sure make the mod team think twice before calling quits), so imo think of this donations more has a small risk investment.

Halo 3. What a great example. I'm sure Ashkandi's gonna earn at least as much as them by giving you the mod he created after working for years on it. We should totally hang him for this. How he dare to give a shotgun to donors. Despicable Ash, you're despicable. Give it for free or I wish you suffocate in the pile of money you make from this >:(

this is the first time that i hear of this, and i read there are now 2 mods doing this, Grey and Cry of Fear.
i am a modder myself and have released with my group over a dozens sp-mods but never asked a donation for any extra content, and i have to say that i am not a big fan of this this. but, that is just personal. like you say, we don't need to donate, and the mod is still released for free, only without this extra shotgun. so its indeed up to everyone who want to donate to do so. it does make indeed like you also say, that now you HAVE to release the mod, because taking money and not deliver at all, that simply can't be the case. so that is a good thing of this all....

if this is legally ok, that i don't know. something says me that this is on the edge, but, you are free to do so until they complain.

If you've heard of Sven-Coop (which surely you must have) then Grey and CoF are not the first mods you've heard of that take donations (and give special content as a thanks)

SC has been doing it for years and I have never seen anyone complain about that.

I love how people making fantastic mods FOR FREE get yelled at by the community for trying to make a few bucks to help get something out of it. Bear in mind, the whole goddamn mod is free, you whiners. If you're going to be ****** because some of us are excited to help the developers get some extra cash for making something awesome in their free time, go jump off a cliff. If you're poor, I don't really care. Take your bitching elsewhere. Pretty sure LiveJournal and MySpace are still up, take your angsty teen ******** there, faggots.

Will we be emailed via the email connected to our Paypal regarding donor benefits? Or will that happen separately somehow?

Ashkandi Jan 27 2012 replied:

First i send a mail to check your e-mail is working, asking about what name would you see in the credits, then i'll send you a code on e-mail before the release, you can open the extra stuffs with that.

I'd like to know. Will I be able to donate after the game in completed? And if so, if I download the game THEN donate would I still be able to aquire the Double barrel? Also looking at the image it seems to have 2 barrel lengths, a shorter one and a longer one, is that intentional? Are there 2 double barrels?

Alters Apr 19 2012 replied:

Sorry for the late response, just noticed this now.

Donators do not need a separate download of the game so donating after downloading is fine.

We will likely accept donations for a short time after mod release as we have made our donator system dynamic enough that we can still give access to the donator items on release. Please note though that the donator effects take affect immediately on start of the game (as in, pressing New Game) and adding you as a donator partially through a saved game would not give you the donator weapon.

In regards to the double barrel there is only one, it's just perspective giving it the look of two different ones.

Right right, thank you for the reply, I am really wanting to download this mod, AND get the double barrel as they are my favourite shotgun. Sadly I'm not in a place to donate right now. Out of curiosity what is the Donating range AND currency as you see I'm British.
