The comment reply system has been enhanced, with two new features.

Posted by INtense! on Feb 13th, 2012

For a long time the comment system here has been lacking, and while the following changes by no means make it perfect, I believe they will help those actively posting and replying to comments. The first change you will notice is inline replies. Now when you click the "reply" button the reply box opens directly below - this should make it much easier to know what you are replying to.

The second change is opt-in, which basically emails you whenever someone replies to a comment you have posted. To turn this on, edit your userprofile and check the following box:

Other changes I am considering include notification when people post a comment in a profile you control (i.e. if you run a mod and someone comments in there, you will be emailed, same for news posts and media). However I am concerned that would result in too many emails and so have not done it at this point. Also considering adding the ability for Facebook / Twitter users to post comments easily and a way to view your comment history in your user profile.

AWESOME! Been wanting this feature almost since I joined, lol.

Also, I have a suggestion to avoid too many emails on the tracking all comments on a mod page feature you mentioned. If there was a separate "Updates" section at the top of the page near the other updates, and Thread Watch for Comment updates, that'd be pretty cool. You'd probably get a lot of updates if your mod or group was popular, but it beats getting a ton of emails.

Frankly that's a nuclear option. You might lose something else in your mail when clearing it, and there are those of us who save e-mails that we find important...

So yeah, I'd say it be better if we could have just a separate update section.

This would be amazing. If volume of mail is a concern, a daily digest would work great

How about instead of E-mail we receive a PM message in our inbox? Wouldn't that be easier?

Agreed, just add a new item to the update list "new comments on page X" instead of a mail.

Email notification is not required at all. All we need is a notification on ModDB itself in your updates listing about a posted comment. That would really solve a lot of problems.

Right next to your PMs. A little asterisk or something with a number next to it to show your notifications.

Not that I'm being ungrateful... a comment system update is much overdue.

You should just have this be a part of updates (like mail and mod watch). It would make it easier to keep track of and give people the option to keep their inbox less cluttered.

It's an idea, anyways. I would also be very much in favour of a system that notified me when a comment is placed on my mod, be they comments on the mod's home page or on a specific item (news, screens, videos, etc.). It would stop me from having to manually look at each part of my mod, which gives those pieces artificial views as well.

Fantastic! I've really wanted a feature like this, especially for when I am asking someone a question about something. It was a bit annoying to have to keep checking back on the post, although I suppose I could have PM'd them instead.

nice. the only thing left to "fix" (actually it's not a bug) is when you missed the +/- button and hit the opposite button, you can't reverse your choice.

but maybe i am the only one who experiences this, and are only to nervous all the time :D

Hell_Diguner Feb 13 2012, 6:01pm says:

My suggestion, which may already have been made by others:
(rather than email...)
-Create a comment 'thread' watch feature, similar to the forum thread watch feature.
-Allow users to watch comment (and forum) threads that others have made.
-Allow users to watch all comments posted under specific content of a mod/game (image, video, news post, summary section, all images/video/news, etc)
-Create a system to facilitate quick 'stop watching' of multiple threads, including categorization by mod/game and media type (image, video, etc.)

-Effectively I'm asking to make the comment watch feature an expansion of the game/mod/group/member watch feature, and also add more control over exactly what a user can select to watch (and unwatch).
